sketchy hot water heater

Sometimes a full tank and sometimes a hot shower. Sometimes only a few seconds of hot water.
1. LP tank full
2. stove works great
3. LP heater works great

I am going to check the tube where gas gets to burner to see if there is anyone living in there but why does the LP water heater work great sometimes and poorly others? FYI, drained earlier this year for winterization. Bypass on and then turned to flow water through upon use this spring. Anode rod fine. Pressure relief valve works fine.

IDEAS? When missus takes a cold shower, she is NOT HAPPY. Guess what that means?

On the front (outside) of your water heater, in the upper left hand corner, under the exhaust, is a black (maybe orange on older units) rubber cover. Behind that cover is a "high limit/thermostat" switch. That may be defective, sometimes working, until the high limit kicks in, which would cause the heater to shut down and not reheat the water, until it cools down and resets.

Not sure if this is going to be helpful but when you open the cover of the water heater, can you see the heater control card? We had a 2003 Pioneer that did similar things the first two times out and I finally looked at the control card. Ours had a diagnostic LED lamp that was flashing an error code. Took the rig back to the shop and told the service department about the code, found that the control card itself was the problem: one or more of the solder joints were not good and the heating separated the joint after about the third or fourth heating cycle, causing the error. Atwood had a service announcement out at the time and the control card was changed.
