Slide out won't retract/converter issue?

Hello I bought a 2002 keystone Springdale 295bh and am having issue with the slide out. It slides out ok (might stop once or twice) but struggles to retract. It moves a few inches an then stops, wait 30 seconds and then it will move a few more inches and stops again. It takes about 15 minutes to fully retract it. The camper is plugged into external power and I replaced the battery last fall. I had a RV repair shop look at it and they say that the converter is bad. Not sure if I trust them and they want $750+ to replace the converter. My converter is a Magnetek 6332 and I don't seem to see a direct replacement for it. If it is a converter issue can a 35amp converter be used in place of a 32amp without replacing the wiring in the camper? Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum!!
I would check the voltage at the battery while plugged in. If it isn’t 13VDC or better then yeah you need a converter. If the replacement fits the same place and is 35A, your good to go.

This sure sounds like the common issue with a 12 volt auto reset breaker being too weak and opening and closing while operating the slides. I would investigate this before I would replace the converter, unless you really have a failed converter.

That would be my second check after verifying converter operation.

Can that breaker be tested or is it just better to be replaced?

Cheap enough to just replace.

What amp fuse does it take and where would it be located? Is there a wiring diagram out there for it?

If the underside is open spray some dry lube in the slide rails. I do that on our 2003 every spring and fall and it helps alot

Not sure if this applies to OP's situation, but worth a watch.

Me too, I would like to know where this is located. I had never heard of this breaker before.

I had a similar experience with the slide in an older 5er so may not apply. I went through and opened all of the electrical junction boxes I would find and tightened all of the connections (make sure all electrical is disconnected, including battery). Everything worked great after that until I sold the rig 10 years later.

Resettable breaker is opening up when it gets hot due to age or high current flow due to low voltage.

Easy to check with a multi meter and I sure as the devil would not pay $750 for a new converter. Hiway robbery is an understatement.

New converter and new resettable breaker under $200 and basic mechanical skills to replace both

You are looking for this. It may have a small rubber cover over it.

Slides need real deep cycle batteries. Most common is Trojan T-105. They are 6V golf cart batteries so you need 2 in series. Don't believe claims of marine or combi batteries. They are completely different and only true deep cycle will work in the long haul. A 32 or 35 amp converter is very small, it should be more like 50 to 75 depending on slides and other heavy loads. $750 is a crazy price, the top of the line units are closer to $300 with basic units in the $50 price range. It's a simple deinstall and reinstall if it is actually bad which I doubt. Wiring might be an issue if you move up to a 50 or 75. That affects the wires that charge the batteries only.

Smile Slidout's

I just had slide problems with my 2012 Alpine. The slides would start and stop.
Took it to a dealer and they said everything checked out ok. Got it home and had the same problem. I finally traced it to the auto reset breakers mounted next to the batteries. I replaced both of them and everything works like it should.

I had the same experience as Heli190. Now I carry a full set (three different sizes for my Copper Canyon) of spare auto reset breakers. You can have the same type failure with your landing gear as with the slide. I don't remember what the third one is for.

Had similar problem on my 03 Monty. Discovered it was weak breaker, located on wall behind and above batteries. One for slides and other for landing gear.

BOBBECKY can you give me an idea what this auto reset looks like and its location. Is it near the battery or located on the slide. I am having the same issue. Thanks

Auto resetting circuit breaker could also be on the fuse panel. When you look at the row of fuses, the most common place is the top or bottom slot. It will plug in just like a fuse but it will be a solid copper color.
