Slide Maintenance

Is slide maintenance something that needs to be done by the dealer or can I do it myself. If so what needs to be done. 2015 Passport 3320BH

Slide seals need to be conditioned periodically, ideally twice a year. Stay away from products that lubricate the seals as it will create friction between the rubber and hard surfaces. Products like Aerospace 303 and Armor All will bind up the bottom seal plate and side seals, causing jerking and chattering. There are a couple of dry conditioner products on the market that can be purchased for top dollar. But tweety bird once whispered to me that a thin application of baby powder is all you need. Now, my slide activates as smooth as butter. Search for "slide seals RV Geeks" on YouTube as they illustrate how well it works for them.

I put baby powder on the seals. On the bottom of the slide, I use PTFE WD-40.

I had problems with the actual slide lube, but the method above has been working well.

It's my understanding that the "slide conditioners" contain chemicals that "condition" the seals, prevent them from premature cracking and keep the rubber moist so it won't crack, separate and dry out (dry rot).

Baby powder, actually "talc" which is a carcinogen, coats the surface of the rubber seals, makes them slick so the slide will operate more smoothly, but I believe, powder does nothing to prolong the life of the rubber or to preserve its condition.

I use and at work we use a foaming slide seal conditioner. It's MADE FOR SLIDE SEALS, and we haven't had a single customer come back with any complaints.

I use CAMCO foaming seal conditioner and have never had a problem. I can understand why some people would be "gun shy" with the shuddering and slide movement problems they've had, but I wouldn't want someone to think baby powder is a "do all" that protects their rubber seals. It will make the slides move in and out while "slipping along" the seals, but it can do nothing to replace or add to the moisturizers that are in seal conditioner. Depending on where a trailer is stored, the UV and heat can (and will) destroy rubber seals quickly unless they are "conditioned". Applying dry talc to the surface of the rubber won't replace the chemicals that are leached out by the sun's temperature and UV radiation.

When I bought my rig in June I bought a can of the Camco foaming condtitioner and applied it a few weeks ago. Seals seem well conditioned and decently soft. I will be watching them closely to see how the conditioner works over time.

In 10 years, if I still own my current coach, I'll report back on the preservation of the seals with just a bi-annual 10 cent application of the the white stuff. Seems though, that full timers are having great success with it, including the YouTube boys cited above.

As far as it having a carcinogenic effect with household uses, recent studies have been mixed with modern day asbestos-free talc. The scare-train of cancer is more appropriate for substantiated compositions such as nicotine products and solar UVA.

I had my previous fiver for 13 1/2 years and used slide seal conditioner. Still in good shade when I sold it.

I have a lippert electric slide. The two roller gears look like they should be lubed. The lippert manual says no lube. What's right?

I found the Lippert Maintenance Manual.

http://www.lci1.com/assets/content/s...Out-Manual.pdf

There are preventative maintenance instructions and lubrication instructions. None on it looks too tough for a DIYer.

Ok, so for rubber seals, i read, heard, seen something, someone, or other wise I don't know, but have always used Industrial Silicon spray, two or three times a year on the last 3 travel trailers, since 06, and never had a rubber seal problem with cracking or etc. I hope I've not just been lucky, but will still continue to use the Silicon until otherwise. and on the gearing I use a dry spray lube for all metal moving parts.. see any problems with that ?
