Window seals

This weekend we spent time scrubbing the outside of the trailer, it shines like it is new. There are a few areas I need to caulk around, mostly lights and valves. Most of the windows look ok but it got me thinking when the seal around the windows starts to shrink and become all crusty, do you caulk or take the window completely out, scrape and replace the whole original seal?

If the seals are dry, crusty and shrinking so as to be able to see cracks, it is time to remove the window, scrape and clean off all the old sealant, and apply butyl tape around the window. Do not apply silicone over old sealant and I would not use silicone as a seal for my windows. You can buy butyl tape at RV supply stores or try one of the big box retailers.

When putting the window back in, just tighten the screws enough so that the butyl tape starts to squeeze out and then tighten a tiny bit more. Carefully trim off the excess with a plastic knife or something similar.

I have worked for dealerships who have told me to scrape the old seal away and replace with silicone. Keep in mind, this is on a used unit that is being prepped to be put on the lot for sale. I actually once told a shop foreman "if it were my trailer, I would pull the window and re-set it" I was ignored. I also have had customers want me to cover it up with silicone. Really, it's just putting lipstick on a pig. I agree 100% that a full re-set is the only way to go!

If you're going to keep it then pull it out, clean it and reseal it.
You don't want to start any delamination under the windows...
Happy trails,
