If the butyl tape has been applied correctly, there should be no need for any additional sealant or caulking to go on top of it. If you are talking about silicone, for example, I'm not sure if it would adhere properly to the butyl tape.
With time, the butyl tape sometimes oozes or "creeps" out of the joint and becomes unsightly - usually turning black - and perhaps that is the reason why a fresh application of clean, white tube-type sealant or caulking may be applied.
