What is this wheel tring to tell me?

Just finished a 1400 mile trip home.

I noticed the wheel on the left is discolored - grease? The other three wheels are mostly clean...

What is this wheel trying to tell me?

I think it is saying, get on your belly and look at the back side of it. Maybe someone has a 100% known reason what it is, I do not. It could be brake dust, road dirt, grease. Do you know how to check the brakes and bearings?

Usually if the rear bearing seal has failed the brake drum will fill with grease not the outer side of the wheel. I would pop off the center rubber disc and see if the zerk fitting has failed or if that is the source of the grease. It is possible that the bearing was over greased and the grease was pushed out by the heat. In any case I would pull that wheel and inspect the bearings and brakes. JM2¢, Hank

Looks like something is getting hot and cooking your bearing grease. Could be the tire, bearings or hanging brakes. Some good hands-on troubleshooting is surely called for.

I agree with the ops. get that wheel off before you go anywhere again. take a good look at the shoes. and the magnet. you can pull the other wheel so you can compare the good with the not so good. once you get the bearings out of the hubs clean the races in the hubs are they blue or pitted? if yes replace both the inner and outer bearings.if the races look good. clean the bearings are the rollesr blue or pitted if they are new bearings. pack them well and please use new seals. just have lots of towels to wipe the grease off and some adult soda to wash it all down when finished. Also if you do this and do not know how to adjust the bearings and brakes ask for help. Good luck

alien_scones, Howdy;

I agree with everything SAABDOCTOR said, but start looking at your Bearing
Buddy cap as well. A lot of truck driver see something very much like what
you have shown us. It's the result of their oiler plugs not being properly seated
or worn out and leaking. You have grease in your hubs not oil, but the centrifugal
forces will force grease out of the plastic caps edges By-the-way, that's a beautifully
symmetrical pattern ... haven't seen one that pretty in a long time.

That was my thought. Some greases separate oil and the spinning throws that oil out. When I see that, its time for new grease that won't throw oil and most likely new rubber caps and seals.

I've been using grease from Texas Refinery Corp for almost a dozen years now on everything I have. Its the most stable and capable grease I have ever used.

I ended up replacing everything except the axle and wheels.

$1700.

The tires were replaced last week before the trip.

May have cost you some cash, but you can sleep well knowing that rig will stop safely when needed. Nothing worse than not knowing if or when you need to make an emergency stop and if the brakes will do their job. New tires and brakes, almost as good as a new trailer.

No telling how much heat was dissipated into that tire. I'd be thinking seriously about replacing it or making it my spare.
