Locking someone in the trailer - Door lock question

Friend's son got locked in their trailer. They asked me to look at the lock and in playing with it, I noticed if you lock the deadbolt and take the key out horizontally, the inside red lever doesn't do anything. If you lock it but turn the key back 90 degrees and take it out vertically, the red lever works.

Then tried my trailer and found the same thing.

Is this how they are supposed to work and why would there be a way to lock it that it can't be unlocked from the inside.

Of course, now that I know this it's time to tick off the wife

That's funny because I was told by a locksmith to always return the key to the vertical position before removing it. He claimed it prevented many problems that folks have with this type of lock. After reading your story maybe he was trying to get me in trouble with Mama. (That's not hard to do) You realize I will have to try this now. (I better do it with the door open and the DW outside)

Vertical was fine. It was taking it out horizontal that caused the issue.

Kid was almost late for work and had to get his mom to let him out.

Too bad he did not think of going out the emergency exit.

GMcKenzie,

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago ~~ DH left early one morning to go fishing, and locked the dead bolt (instead).
When the sun came up, I decided to go outside & have my coffee... ummm, *didn't happen*!!
I could NOT, no matter what I did, get that door unlocked from the inside. But... no harm, no foul - lesson learned; and neither of us
lock the dead bolt from the outside anymore, when someone is in the FW.

Not really sure why he didn't think of that either. He's a skinny thing that should fit fine (me, on the other hand.....)

On my Cougar that's a 7' drop to the ground. I would rather break a door than a leg ...... cheaper and less painful. This is all hypothetical since there is no way my corpulent butt would fit through that window. On the other hand, in a fire, watch me bounce.

Leaving Yourself Open - Again

Hank -

Is it really hypothetical or a just one of those "plain facts"? Just asking a rhetorical question......

I tested my setup today. I'm using an aftermarket handle:
http://www.rvlocksandmore.com/Global...TTL-43900-2006

No matter what I do, I can't lock someone in. I can't remove a horizontal key from the deadbolt. It has to be returned to center. Door latch key needs to be horizontal when locked. In any configuration, the red lever releases the deadbolt and the inside handle *always* releases the regular bolt.
