Guide to Towing via Trailer Life
First add max weight of your truck with max weight of trailer and compare to the GCWR or Groos Combined Weight Rating of your truck. If the total weight of truck and trailer at full load is over the rated combined rating for the truck, go for a larger, more powerful truck.
Example: My Tundra has a GCWR of 14,000, Truck GVWR is 6,700, Trailer GVWR is 7,200 or 13,900, the truck is under its GCWR.
GCWR of 14,000 less GVWR 6,700 is 7,300 or Effective Max towing capasity.
GCWR of 14,000 less the actual rolling weight of the truck, 5,800 yeilds a tow ability of 8,200 pounds.
In actual usage my truck accelerates up steep hills towing abut 6,500 lb TT. My MPG towing is 11.4.
