toilet/leak and back up
The last time we used our Keystone Bullet, there was a small leak around the base of the toilet. We checked and did not feel/see leak from water connections so we assumed it was going to be the seal. We were planning to upgrade to a Dometic 310 (opinions about that welcome) so figured it would get fixed with the toilet replacement. BUT the day before we left, there was water which I believe came from black tank that backed up in to the bathtub. We flushed the toilet and the water disappeared. Any suggestions/recommendations? I hate to pay someone a ton of money if it is something we can fix ourselves. I was planning on replacing the toilet ourselves--we have replaced the ones in the house and the one in the TT does not seem to be too complicated.
Thanks in advance!!

If your current toilet is a Thetford the Dometic will be a upgrade.
Typically the shower/bathtub won't drain into the black tank, but some will have the bath sink drain into the black depending on tank & fixture locations.
If by chance you had both the drain valves open they could possibly mix black/grey, but you shouldn't have black water backing up into the shower. Just FYI, NEVER leave the the black drain valve open when connected to sewer connection, keep closed & dump when needed. You can leave the the grey drain open but close it a day or two before dumping the black to use as a rinse after draining the black.

Martha, replacing the toilet in your RV is about the same as one in your home. There is a good video on this RV dealer's website on install. I added an inline shut off valve to the water supply when I installed our Dometic toilet. It is the tall model with the porcelin base. As far as water backing up into the tub, we have done that when the black tank was full. Our tub/shower and toilet are teed into the black tank and I suspect yours is as well. Drain the black tank! Good luck.

I don’t recommend leaving any waste tank valve open. Had a full timer in a class C that his gray tank quit draining and was backed up. Into the shower. I took the valve apart and still no flow, needless to say when the clog started to come apart it was a FOUL MESS. Worse than any black tank I have dealt with.
I say leave them closed til dumping time, JMHO YMMV

thanks all--both black and gray valves were closed when the back up occurred --I have finally made my hubby understand why you don't want to leave them open. We know the tank was not full as we had only been there 2 days and were using the bathhouse for showers and most toilet trips Did not happen again, just that one time. Maybe we will go ahead and replace the toilet and see what happens next time out

The back up happened due to a tank over full could been the black or gray. The leaking toilet base is another matter. The toilet leak could have been as simple as a loose toilet connection to the floor. Unless you checked it. I would not rule that out.

If your toilet is OE, which I figure it is, then it's probably a Thetford. The Dometic is an upgrade for sure. In your current situation you might check behind the toilet; there are 2 screws back there that hold the top to the bottom (bowl to pedestal). If they are loose they will let water run inside the pedestal and come out under the bottom of the commode. If any of the seals leak inside the pedestal it does the same thing.
Another issue is toilet pedestal itself. Depending on when they changed the design (my 2020 wasn't like this), the inside of the pedestal has built in "cups" in the corners that collect and then let water run out exiting under the pedestal bottom. If yours is made like that, you have a leakage problem and you decide to replace it; DO NOT pick it up and tilt it over chest high to put it in a dumpster....some nasty stuff will come flowing out soaking you and "make your day"; don't ask me how I know.

I may have missed if you stated what brand your current toilet is, but I upgraded my Dometic 300 to a 310 under warranty. The 310 does require a little bit more distance behind the toilet for clearance, but I do not know this distance any longer, sorry. You should be able to call Dometic and they can provide you with the information needed. I just thought I just wanted to pass this along before you order a new toilet just in case it doesn't fit. Installation was quick and easy.
