Adjusting brakes

I noticed my brakes on the trailer are not as strong as they once were. How do I adjust them or is this an electrical problem?

If you have ever adjusted drum brakes on a car, they adjust the same way. If not, the best way to explain it is for you to go to you tube and look up electric brakes. There are some pretty good videos that will show you step by step on how to adjust them.

I guess that you do not have a dexter manual. It explains how to adjust and maintain the axles, brakes, bearings. Crawl under the trailer and get the axle SL#s off of them and phone/email dexter with that # and they will be able to tell you everything you would ever need to know about the axles you have. Thats what I did.

I adjusted my brakes a couple weeks ago. It is fairly easy if you have instructions and the right tools. Since you need to have the tires raised from the ground I also lubed my wheel bearings at the same time. I noticed a slight braking improvement.

I guess I'm getting lazy but I'd first check to see if you have self adjusting brakes. If so it's a lot easier than jacking the trailer and all, although I'm sure you get much closer adjustment doing it manually.

I was thinking of trying out my "Trailer Aid Plus" to see if it actually got my individual tires off the ground and at the same time adjusting the brakes if it in fact did.
However not so sure about crawling under anything not supported with jack stands.
After reading not to place jack under axle I am procrastinating.

Hummm, no jacks under axle . . . I guess I have never checked out the manual about this. If you can't put a jack under the axle there must be designated lift points some place? I assume? Where would that be?

brakes

I just picked up our 2012 Alpine from the RV dealer this morning where I had the bearings repacked. I had also asked that the brakes be adjusted as a routine matter and was told they were self adjusting. As you are backing up, just tap the brakes several times and you're usually done.

Actually, if his trailer has the Dexter self adjusting brakes, they are forward adjusting, unlike most autos and trucks that have drums and are reverse self adjusting. If the drums haven't been off in a while, like a couple of years or more, it would be wise to pull them. The bearings should be inspected and repacked and of course, the brakes should be checked at that time. Too many stories of grease on the linings, broken parts in the brake mechanisms, worn out linings, etc. I know it seems to be a nuisance, but when going down that hill and the brakes stop working, is not the time to regret not doing it.

Yes, read in my manual that I needed to manually adjust brakes and here is some reading on Dexter axles and jacking.
