Suburban water heater won’t lite without the door off.

My suburban water heater will cycle a few times then get a incommand error. So I clear the error and head outside and try again, bunch of clicks and a big poof of fire comes out the door vents but didn’t stay lit. So I opened the door cleaned it out and left the door open and it lit and stayed lit. Closed the door attempt to lite and it flames out again. Open the door attempt to lite and it lites fine.

Anyone experience this? Are there not enough vents on my door? Is the gas solenoid not letting out enough gas from the start allowing it to build too slowly? That wouldn’t make sense if it works with the door open....

I closed and opened the tanks slow, switched between tanks, turned on my stove and fridge as well as heat on to purge any air.

There is adjustment Allen screws on it, assuming that adjust the amount of gas that comes out.

Check the silver chimney on the right hand side, make sure insects haven't blocked it.

Those Allen screws are plugs, us techs use the as test ports for measuring gas pressure and there isn’t any adjustment.

As stated above, take the tube off and check for spider webs. If you do find some/ clean themmall out and then use cheap flea collars cut up to help prevent it from happening again.
