Bunk Railing

Hey all. I'm looking for some help. Has anyone modified an upper bunk with a safety railing for young kids. I know my son would love to sleep up there but I don't feel good about it without a railing of some sort. Any suggestions/do's or don'ts/pictures would be appreciated.

Any Surgical Supply Store, or maybe a furniture store should be able to sell you a Stainless Steel "bedside safety rail" that slides under the mattress. It works similarly to a hospital bed, , but requires no drilling. The weight of the person stabilizes/anchors it, and the rail comes up and down as needed. That way when not needed, it can be removed by just lifting the mattress, and pulling it out.

I don't have photos but in my last fifth wheel upper bunk, installed a 1x6 piece of harwood (stained to match) onto the entire length of the existing wooden bunk edge. This provided an additional 4" or so of ccontainment and looked like it was factory installed. It was very strong and my kid never fell out.
I would recommend this versus a store bought rail system.

Last winter I built a couple bed rails for the bunks in my trailer. They are made from poplar, and stained to match (the best I could) the existing trim. I removed the factory trim piece that runs along the edge of the mattress, and attached the bed rail using the screws and screw holes from the factory trim piece. On the inside I installed 4 "L" brackets to add some strength. The side with the ladder is where my 6 yr old sleeps, so I left then end open so he can get up and down. The bunk on the other side is where my 3 yr old sleep, the rail runs the entire length. Next year I will trim it to match. Here are some photos.

We bought a clamp on railing at IKEA for our last trailer, worked well.

I got some large L brackets and some pre cut stained board's made for DIY shelving from home depot and bolted them in. Looks good and keeps the kids in the bunks. I'll try and remember to get pics tomorrow.

As others have said before, just use one of these. We did for our kids when we had a truck camper and they slept on the table/bed-

That is what I have used in both my trailers. One was dinette table the new one is in bunkhouse. My son is 9 and does well with it. Easy to move around and very safe.

I searched on Pinterest for PVC bed rail and it showed a really nice one I built with PVC - it cost me less than 15 bucks. You can also make it to your specifications.
