Carport Vs. RV Cover

I'm wanting to get the Hideout covered this winter. I'm deciding on either a RV cover or a carport. I know the carport is not cheap ($3000+) but I've had people tell me a cover is a big waste of time, they don't last, and they're harder than heck to get on. I thought of building a lean-to onto the side of my barn, but I think that will cost me more than a carport.
Anyone care to enlighten me?

We used a cover on our first trailer, It lasted 3 winters. When it fell apart we didn't replace it and just left it uncovered in the open.

If you get wind the covers flap against the side of the trailer and can cause damage to the finish.

Our current trailer is stored in an RV storage yard under a canopy.

If I was able to store it at home I would want a car port or canopy and no cover.

A large shop building to park the RV in is on the list of must haves for our next house.

It would be nice if it fit in the barn, but it's 2 feet too long and 10" too tall. The carport would go next to the barn, hopefully to buffer some of the wind.

Here is my answer.....


I tried a cover on my first RV.....a Fuzion Impact 303. It was a real pain in the rear to put on, and as big of a pain to take off and store. I used it one season and sold it on Craigslist for about $50 bucks the following spring.

Nice thing about a carport is that your trailer won't attract any more rodents than it would without a carport. Can't say that about a cover, at least where I live. Out here, the rodents like chewing your wires in half, and that gets old real soon.

I'm going to talk to a local guy about the steel carport tomorrow. I figure a 18x31x12 should cover it. My camper is 30ft long tongue to tail, and 11'1" at the top of the A/C unit. Thanks for the advice!

I have a 2018 Bullet, its our first off-season with it in western NC. We are considering a cover, don't have room for a car port. What are thoughts on covering??

I built my poll barn 3 ft higher then the 13 ft camper counting the ac. I have had some serious roof repair and was thankful I could complete it out of harsh weather. Mine is 20 x40 lean-too built from 4 inch pipe and purlins.

What's under the carport matters too. If you are installing concrete this conversation is over. Stone with a vaper barrier and proper drainage is not a bad option but maintenance is more difficult. Parking in the weeds or grass creates a high moisture area under the unit and you know the rest of the story.

I had this built a couple of months after purchasing the trailer



It also has water and 30 amp service.

1 month after it was put up, we had a huge hailstorm that cost my insurance company a tone of money, but the only damage to the trailer was a cracked taillight lens.
