Out with the old. Looking for the new
In 2016 we bought our Passport 195RB because it was light and could get into almost anywhere.
We really, really enjoyed exploring the mid West and small town USA.
I once parallel parked on Main St. Zanesville, Ohio.
We drtove though downtown Abingdon VA to bike the Creeper trail.
I'd pull into small town Info Centers hoping I could get out and almost always did.
Up into the UP, West to SLC and South to Huntsville and Orlando.
We have had a blast. BUT!
We are looking at shorter trips of longer duration and a little more roomy TT.
Stage #2 will start soon.

If you still have the 1500 in sig, be aware of the weight limits. Otherwise happy hunting.

We are thinking of one of the smaller 1/2 ton 5'ers.
That means to any rational man, a nice 2500HD.

And once the 5er bug bites you, you’ll be upgrading so start with a 3500. Ask me how I know.

Actually, any rational ‘person’ will start with a 350/3500 and can the 250/2500 idea, just like Chuckster recommends.

We went straight from a 1500 to a 3500...no plans to go 5th wheel tho. Just have slightly more trailer than I'm comfortable with on the 1500. The cost difference between the two was negligible for the benefits, even going with gas...

There are always payload questions with any 3/4 ton relative to a 5th wheel. The half ton label Keystone puts on their line of 5th wheels is something of a fantasy. Almost none can be safely towed by a half ton and many not by a 3/4 ton unless you go gas and have a bigger payload. I am sure you have been around long enough to be able to parse the numbers. Good luck.

The big question is WHY, the cost difference between a 250/2500 and 350/3500 SRW is small, why not get all the payload you can.
There is zero size difference between a 250/2500 and 350/3500.
Yes, GM and Ford have started labeling low GVWR 350/3500 up to about 11,500#, these just have a 250/2500 label, but are truly Class 3 trucks.

Ah shucks! Just go ahead and get the 3500 / 350 dually and start looking at 5er's. There are still lots and lots of places you can camp with a rig like that. You've just got to be a bit more selective and research a bit more. We've camped at every state park and state recreation area in Indiana and found a camp site somewhere that fit us as we grew from tent, to pop-up, to 25 foot travel trailer, to 31 foot, to 35 foot, to a 41 foot 5er. We went from a Chevy S-10 pick up truck, to a Chevy Lumina mini-van, to a 1500 Chevy Suburban, to a 3500 dually gas long bed crew cab, to a 3500 dually diesel long bed crew cab, to a brand new 3500 dually diesel long bed crew cab. Never had a problem camping anywhere, except a couple State Parks in Ohio. Then we just went to the next State Park, no problems.
So, just go ahead and get it all over with now and live the dream!

Best idea yet! Then he won't have to purchase a new truck! He can just tow the old one! That will help reduce his costs!
