Propane regulator/automatic changeover valve
Hi all.
I am smelling propane and hearing a hiss coming form my regular/transfer switch. See attached photo.
When I turn the tanks off there is no more hissing or propane smell. Nothing is on calling for propane inside.
I tried the soppy water spray thing and saw no large or small bubbles but the hiss and smell has me thinking I need to just replace the whole unit.
Thoughts?
If I replace it I would like to get a better quality than the one that came with my 2020 Cougar.
Has anyone done this project? And can any replacement units be recommenced? I would like the new unit to already have the hoses for the tanks attached.

Is it coming from the regulator itself or one of the connections for the pigtails? They can develop leaks. If it is the regulator I would just replace it. Marshall Excelsior is what I've been using....but....if you might be interested , I have a brand new one that looks just like yours that I bought as a replacement for my last TT. I believe it has the pigtails on it (I will have to look in my spare parts box). If you want it and would pay shipping you can have it. Let me know.

It's not coming from the connected lines.
Thanks for the offer I might take you up on that but I was wondering about something better than was on there.
I am hoping someone can recommend a better unit.

Marshall excelsior is in my opinion the best. Swapping over the pigtails is real easy.

I believe the MEGR-253 is what I bought for the spare parts box.
Edit: the above is in the parts box for the 5th wheel but should work for your TT. It does not have the pigtails.

Back a few years ago I swapped out the regulator on my old Jayco TT and it was really an easy job. I got the regulator from etrailer and just had to buy some gas joint thread for the propane connection.

I have detected a leak in my regulator from the vent valve area and replace it with the Camco unit. I used a wrench and adjustable wrench to change over the lines. Be sure to use the gas rated sealing tape on the threads or line dope to assist in proper seal of the lines. Check your work with a soap solution to ensure no more leaks.

Thread sealant is only required on the NPT threads. Flares do not need any.

The thread title should read Propane regulator/automatic changeover valve. The "transfer switch could mislead anyone searching the term transfer switch when used in the proper context of an electrical device used to transfer the source of electricity from shore power to a generator.

I had a similar problem, I was sure it was the regulator, both my pigtails were leaking. Once I replaced them, no more problems. Try flipping the switch and release the pressure one tank at a time to isolate the pig tails leak. The leaks were in the joint between the rubber hose and the fitting, not the actual threaded fittings. Try your soap bubble spray there. It’s common problem for pigtails that have tight twists in the hose. Make sure you use thread tape made for propane, I think it’s yellow in most cases.

Perhaps we should clear up the confusion... ok, I know the thread isn't NPT and is flared; some folks have used special propane pipe dope (or whatever it is called), some have used tape. You recommended nothing be used. Can this get settled as I find the situation confusing. I have never changed a propane fitting and own a 19 year old trailer so this might be something in the future.... thanks

The pigtail hoses come in 2 varieties. The threaded end that screws into the regulator is either threaded with a flat end or threaded with a flared end.
The flared end doesn’t need any sealant.

Another question: I found two Marshall Excelsior. One was a 253 the other a 253H They look nearly identical but no explanation of the difference. Ant thoughts?
