toolbox Adds?

Saw a question on purchasing a PEX tool kit on another forum. A couple people mentioned they carry some Sharkbite fittings with them.

I was thinking about picking up a few Sharkbites and perhaps a cutter and length of PEX I can cut into sections to fit in the toolbox in the truck.

Questions:

1. What would be a good selection of fittings (couplers, 90s etc.)?
2. Is 1/2" PEX used exclusively?
3. Is this a waste of money!?

Mark, about $50 to $75 will get you a tool, some line and an assortment of fittings for your emergency stash. You'll have to use your imagination for what fittings to buy. I don't personally carry any of the above, but I did stay at Holiday Inn Express last night...

It depends on the type of camping you like, if you boondock where you're miles away from anything than certain specialty items like that are a blessing. If you like to camp where you're within a decent commute to home depot or the like then how necessary are those supplies.
Hands up everyone that drives around with everything you need to exact full repairs without a jog into town to pick up supplies.
Now, hands up everyone that used to do that and have since downsized.

After a long think, I make sure I have key items to ensure mobility of the TV / 5er and larger ticket items and tools. Everything else can be purchased nearer the problem.
I'm ok spending $300 at HD USA, $300 at HD Canada gets you diddly.

It's not a weight issue, it's more a storage/ dragging crap around issue.

Good luck

From my experience even if you hauled a hardware store behind you'd still need that one item that you don't/won't have.
I did have the pex tool, a few brass pex fittings all of which fit in a small fishing lure box so didn't take up much space. I did use the tool to tighten the existing clamps on more than one occasion on my rv, but never used the fittings on my rv, did use it on others a time or two helping neighbors or other fellow rvers.

One of the "Pure Michigan" slogans is: You're never more than 5 miles from a large body of water....

I believe it's the same "nationwide" when it comes to hardware stores, HD's and Lowe's.... You're never more than 5 miles from a source of "junk you should have had with you".... That said, between electrical, plumbing, suspension, camping, fishing, boating, firewood prep, cooking, relaxing, generator supply, pneumatic, (this list could go on forever) there's simply not enough space to carry "every emergency supply"...

This may not work for everyone's way of preparing, but for me, I took inventory on things that "probably would need repair" and carry tools for those systems. The other things, like propane, bodywork, paint, roof sealing, diesel engine repair, even welding equipment, I just leave that stuff at home and "statistically" I've never had a need for them while camping... Watch now, on my very next fishing trip, I'll knock a hole in the bottom of my aluminum boat and wish I had my TIG with me

IMHO, "exotic, seldom used tools and supplies" are much easier to just "run down to the hardware store and pick up" rather than try to rummage though all that "stored emergency supply of everything I didn't have room to store at home"..... If you've ever unloaded the front storage on a fifth wheel on a rainy Sunday afternoon, looking for that, "dammit I know it's here somewhere" part..... You know just how valuable that "trip to HD really can be".... YMMV

Pex is available at nearly every hardware store around so I don't carry any. I do carry a Pex cutter. I don't leave it at home because I would end up with a dozen of them simply due to the fact I would forget to bring one.

As far as type; I used to use the rings and had the tool; too much irritation for me - especially after using the push on SharkBite fittings. They are all I use and I just cut off any problematic connection with rings and refit with the push on hardware. I've used quite a few of them and never had a problem with any of them, and....so cheap and so easy.

If you boondock and you typically stay in places where a trip to a hardware store is not feasible I would just buy a 3'-4' length of Pex and throw in it somewhere. Throw in a couple of 90s and in line connectors and call it good. Have you replaced the anti siphon valve on your black tank flush? If not there might be a great place you would wish for a couple of 90s.

You can't carry everything to cover every eventuality so just look at your style of camping and try to have stuff on hand to take care of damage that might take place the way you camp, ie: love to camp under trees - roof damage etc.

I'm still trying to figure out how to make it back to camp from H.D. without forgetting 1 or 2 important parts.

Any home project worth a trip to HD or Lowes will require at least three additional trips before the project is complete.
