Generator Heat

Curious, I have a 2010 Raptor with a 5500 ONAN. It puts off a lot of heat. My last ONAN did the same thing, but my concern is I am storing stuff in the compartment next to the gernerator and it seems awfully warm in it. Am I asking for trouble? There really isn't much between the generator compartment and storage except a thin metal wall.

If you are concerned with the heat buildup and potential fire hazard, would it be worth having peace -of -mind and install some kind of fire-proof insulation between the two? I am assuming the Onan compartment is adequately ventilated to prevent excessive heat build up????

Generator Heat

If the generator compartment is well vented, I would add some high density styrofoam insulation on the wall inside the storage compartment. I would cover the insulation with some type of light weight aluminum sheet. 1" thick = about r-5 that should be enough. 2" (r-10) should stop all heat through the wall.

generator heat

I have a 2005 raptor. My 5500 onan puts out a lot of heat as well. I hooked up a fan which I plug into the trailer and blow air onto the generator. I leave the door open when I run it and use the fan. It makes more noise with the door opened, but I do have concerns about the heat. If I'm running the generator for a long time, I'll hook up another fan and have it blow air from the bottom. I really don't know if it makes any difference, but at least the trailer compartment isn't getting over heated. Mike
