Passport front cap fade

I am not sure what happened, but over time the front cap of my Passport has had a mark in the corner show up where it almost looks like the clear coat is coming off. I have never repaired it there or had it repaired so I am wondering if it happened before it was sold to me, and as the front cap faded over time it has become more visible. I have taken the polisher/compound to it and it didn't work. Has anyone seen this before? What is the cause?
