Prices are crazy?

Dw and I went to Lowe's the other day to pick up some lawn fertilizer and plants for her spring garden. Parked 3 or 4 spaces away from us was a new Dodge (sorry - just can't get used to "Ram") 3500 diesel pickup.

This was one very nice looking truck! Two-tone cream and brown, sprayed in bed liner, 20K factory installed Reese hitch with the puck system, power folding steps, hell - power everything. The truck was a Laramie. There was leather and chrome and lush carpet. It was a "Mega-Cab" with a 6 3/4' bed.

While we were checking this truck out, the owners walked up. He was gracious enough to show us the interior. Captains chairs (full power of course), center console, leather everywhere. The instrument panel featured what appeared to be a 12 or 14 inch screen. Did I mention chrome and leather everywhere?

He told me it had the new, lighter graphite impregnated block, 1000 lb/ft of torque, Aisin (sp?) trans. this was one pretty truck! Then he volunteered that it had cost him $93k. Wow! My 2011 Ford looks way better to me now

Yep, just bought a new 3500 Laramie at the end of the year. Didn't get the diesel/Aisin, preferred the 6.4/4.10/8 speed combo and saved a healthy chunk of money. Didn't want the 12" screen, leather etc. etc. but it was the only one with that drivetrain combo to be found most everywhere I've looked.

I have no idea where the pricing on new vehicles comes from. I sometimes think it's sort of like the RV industry and they just "tack" a pie in the sky number on them to see if they will sell. Of course, with todays increased labor and material costs those numbers may be realistic - who knows. I do know they cost a lot of money and some of the frills they add don't really fit with me and my "bank for the buck" mentality. What's unfortunate to me is that to get some of the things that I really want you have to buy a "package" that includes a 1/2 dozen things I don't want. And the beat goes on I suppose......

"Fully Loaded" trucks from all three HD truck companies are approaching the $100K window sticker. Looking back on the trucks from the 60's and 70's, equipment in them was sparse to say the least. You could hardly find A/C in a truck back then, they all had vinyl (Naugahyde) interior and rubber floor mats. Electric windows??? In a truck ??? Their "window sticker price" was in the upper 3 grand range and we thought they were "expensive trucks"... It sure is different today.

Several years ago, Lincoln marketed a Mark LT, a "luxury, fully equipped half ton truck" that rivaled the Town Car in comfort level... Today's "upper crust trucks" are every bit as luxurious as Lincoln's truck, with just as much "optional equipment".

I shudder to think what a truck will cost in 10 years with the addition of self driving/collision avoidance systems, solar/electric/hydrogen power and "luxury conveniences" that we haven't even imagined today....

I don't know where the "no option options" started, but in 1973 we bought a new Mercedes 300D to bring back to the states. I wanted air conditioning (an option) and automatic transmission (also an option). The only way to get A/C was as a part of a "package" that included electric windows, leather interior, sound deadening, tinted windows, upgraded radio, etc. The only way to get the automatic transmission was as a part of another package that included 4 wheel disc brakes (new in that era), power everything, cruise control, deluxe steering wheel, gauge package, etc....

What started out as a "nice diesel automobile" similar to the taxis in Germany that cost $6000, by the time I got an automatic and air, had a price of $14,000. So much for a $300 transmission and $400 for air conditioning.

Today, seems like all the manufacturers "lump options together" in packages that make it impossible to get a single optional item without spending thousands on all the "fluff" that you just don't want and won't use.....

The couple that had the pick-up referenced are in their 60s - getting ready to retire. I don't know why they would want or need a "mega cab" - maybe they intend to take their grandkids with them?

He opted for the Dodge because our local dealer has a 20 year, 200K warranty. He said it would be his last truck.

We are thinking of replacing our TV this fall when the 2021 models come out and they might be offering incentives on the 2020s. Based on the current pricing trends, I'll either stay with the XLT level or drop down to the XL.
Or just keep the one we've got and hope for the best

Don't know what the Ford incentives will be at the end of 2020 but Ram had some exceptional pricing at the end of 2019. The dealer I bought from told me how good it was but verified that with a friend that is the GM of a Ram dealership in TX and he said if I didn't take advantage of that sale he wouldn't be able to come within 2k of it giving me every cut possible. Hopefully Ford will have something like that when you're ready to buy one.

Our 2017 F150 XLT was stickered at $46,800, but we got it for $35,000. I see ads now for the RAM advertising as much as $14,000 in factory/dealer incentives. Of course, at $93,000 that would still be $79,000. A long way from my first pickup, a 1973 Ford Courier that cost me $2,500 new, or even the 2007 Ranger that I bought new for $24,000.

One of my biggest questions is about people going out and buying their first truck, and not having a trade in to offset some of the price. How in the world do they afford a truck???? DH and I have joked that pretty soon truck dealers will be offering 15 year loans, because no one could afford a monthly payment at a more current/ traditional loan length. I honestly feel sorry for those who want to get into camping, etc and want to buy a new truck.

Makes me glad I went with the bighorn version. I have the 2019 1,000 lb/ft and aisin. Crewcab, only a 8.4 screen not the 12. savend 30k off what that guy paid.

You pretty much have to get a quad cab with Ram. No regular cabs or super cabs to be found.

XLT is a good compromise trim level. It does allow you to upgrade some options without the full price of a Lariat.

I'm looking at buying a 2020 F350 just like the one I have now. I too plan on waiting for the fall when they push the current models out to make room for next years model. I went online and "built" a 2020 XL with every possible option and it came to $69K plus change. They will easily drop $15K off the MSRP and still make money on the deal. Most large SUV's and full size trucks have about $20K profit built into the MSRP today so keep that in mind when you go shopping. And about the only option I couldn't get on the XL was leather seats, but I like cloth better anyway.

We bought our TV used (3 model years later at the time) and I think we were offered a 10 or 12 year note on it.

We bought an XLT with the big package to get heated seats and the center console and big Nav screen. Then I went and bought leather off eBay and installed it myself.

So about the only thing a lariat has that my truck doesn’t is cooled seats and keyless push button start.

Now days there are too many low down no down loans both for TV and RV's. All kinds of hooks with these, High payments or very long terms, Gap insurance, possible negative trade-in value.

Our Ram was three years used when we purchased, good trade-in for paid for SUV, and additional cash. No Gap, above water, and realistic payments.

I will say the person the OP spoke to got taken, or was bragging on the sticker price. On a $93K MSRP, the out the door should have been closer to $80K or less.

Id say a nice even $78K would do the trick. And I suspect there might be some BS involved here....hmmmm?

Well - I was thinking that also. If I had paid 93K for a truck, I think I would keep it to myself He was probably quoting the window sticker.

If I were going to "brag" about what I paid it would be how little I paid. If I really got sucked into a $93K truck, no one but me would know that.
