Hey Ram Diesel Guys...

A buddy of mine has a 2017 (I believe) Ram 3/4 ton diesel. He says he doesn't even try to fuel up at truck lanes as his fuel filler neck is too small to accommodate the pump nozzles there. Doing some Googling, I see this is an issue. Is there any workaround / adapter etc. for this? I didn't see anything too promising in my search.

I had a 2016 before the current 2018. I don't recall that.
There is certainly no issue with the 2018. It takes truck stop big nozzles.
Maybe a 2500 only issue.

That’s kind of sad if Ram has taken a step backwards over the years. We had a 1999 Dodge Cummins 2500 and it had the ability to use big nozzles at the truck stops. On the flip side,I have never heard of an adapter so you still can use large nozzles on a small nozzle vehicle. I think I would be asking the dealer if someone messed up the truck during the build that it ended up like that, or if they can fix the issue and put a larger diameter fill in.

My 2012 2500 was able to fill with truck nozzles and my 2020 3500 can as well…but I hold the nozzle…I don’t think you can stick it in the filler tube and walk away like a gas nozzle..don’t think it fits all the way in the filler tube but it works

Looking at a couple of Ram forums, this is a fairly common thing. Not sure if it's model or year related or both.

You can always get something like this or have one machined out of aluminum if it really bothered you…but again it’s not been a problem with mine

Thanks Jasin. I will pass this info on to my friend. I’m guessing he just gave up after seeing it didn’t quite fit.

Never had a problem with my '94 or my '04.5 and both are 2500s but it does sound like a mistake that could happen on an assembly line very easily.

2017 Ram 2500 here, never had a issue. Not sure what your friend did wrong or where he went, but I’ve never had a issue filling up using the semi-truck lanes.

I'm beginning to suspect he probably just needs to pump the fuel more slowly. He is a semi-retired truck driver so I'm sure he is used to just letting it rip. He probably had a bad experience early on and never tried again. I will see him later today and get more info. Thanks all for the replies.

PS...the reason this came up was that I asked him if he used the TSD fuel card, which is a savings program for diesel only. It's my understanding that the card must be used in the truck lanes.

I would almost bet that if it has the wrong tailpiece for diesel nozzles that the parts department at any Ram dealer could get the correct one or have the service department swap it out!

I've had Ram diesels since 2004... 5 different ones and never had a problem. You do have to use some finesse sometimes depending on the nozzle and the pump speed. BUT if a guy from Oregon where we don't pump our own fuel can figure it out anyone can

I've not had a problem but I suspect that all truck stops don't use the same nozzle. In the army I pumped with an oversize one in big vehicles.

I also have a 2017 2500. Haven’t had any issues with big rig nozzles. I’ve only filled at the name brand truck stops that are frequented by rv’ers.

I also had a 2017 3/4 ton Ram. I only used truck lanes when pulling the fifth wheel. Never a problem.

When towing I use the truck lanes. At my home area I use the truck lanes even when not towing.

I've only had 2 times I had trouble getting the nozzle back out. I think it was hanging up on the lower flap inside the fill tube.

I appreciate all the responses.

I talked to my buddy some more this evening. His truck is actually a 2014 and he does have the flap as mentioned in the previous post. His issue is the same as some others have described, the nozzle on most truck lane pumps do not fit entirely into the opening so it needs to be held in place when pumping. I'm guessing these are high volume nozzles? Perhaps there are some stations/pumps that do not use these? But, for whatever reason he can't simply put the nozzle in fully, lock it and pump, without worrying about it falling out. Perhaps others with this issue just force it down further and hope they don't get hung up. I do know he is not the only one that has to contend with this as I found several posts at Dodge and Ram forums that discuss it.

I have a 2020 2500 and use the truck lanes when towing. Due to flow you can't just go max on the handle but it works fine. Prior to this, I had a 1500 ecodiesel and that had the problem being discussed.
