Where to mount inverter

How do I separate my inverter from the two lead-acid batteries it will connect to? I have a 2006 Cougar 5th wheel EFS 281. The batteries are located in the front compartment. Noting warnings about sparks from the inverter possibly sparking gasses from the lead-acid batteries, I want to be cautious.

The further away from the battery(s) you mount the inverter will require larger cables. If the battery(s) are properly vented, I don’t see an issue mounting it in the same compartment.

Mine is 18 inches above the battery. The battery is in a sealed and vented battery box.

You want to mount the inverter as close to the batteries as possible. Heavy 12vdc draw like an inverter demands does not tolerate long cables unless they're getting as big around as your thumb. On the other hand, 120vac doesn't mind longer wire runs with smaller gauge wire, think extension cords.

If you're concerned about battery gasses, set them up in a box similar to this. This is just an example..

Your batteries should be in a sealed battery box like the one Mike557 linked to. If they are, and if the boxes are vented to the outside, then there should be no issue with installing the inverter in the same compartment. If you're concerned that you could get battery gasses leaking into the compartment, install the inverter on the "outside wall of the battery compartment and drill a hole through the wall to route the cables. Seal that hole with silicone after the cables are installed and you know the inverter is working properly.

I mounted my inverter and solar charge controller on the inside top of the battery compartment. They are about 2 1/2 feet above the battery boxes that are both vented to the outside.

Never had any issues since I installed over 5 years ago.

X3, mount the inverter as close to the batteries as possible, the 12v cables are much more expensive compared to the 110v lines you will run from the inverter to the 110 fuse box.

I mounted mine in the pass through directly behind the batteries. Drilled a couple of holes in the wall for the battery cables then sealed with caulking. Works great for me.
