What is this switch.

There are 2 of these- one in the bedroom and one in the kitchen area. Since they have wires attached, they must do something…..
Second question is whether anyone here has replaced these particular light switches with one the can dim the lights. I can’t seem to get the plastic outer ring off to access what I suppose are mounting screws and I don’t want to break it. Thanks in advance!

Those are remote “thermistors” they report the temp to the thermostat.

Chuck. Not to hijack the thread but what’s the best way to take the switch off the wall with the light under the thermister? Does the outside bezel pop off with a screwdriver or do you pop off the switch from the bezel? I can’t stand the lighted switches and want to extinguish that light once and for all! ….it’s too bright

I'm buffaloed. Why would a thermistor have a switch on it? (Much less a light.)

The switch just happens to be mounted just below the thermistor..it’s an illuminated switch

Ah, so then the OP's original question "what does this switch turn on" is still a mystery.

I think the op used the term “switch” for the thermistor ..it looks like he was trying to replace the light switch with dimmer switches or at least investigate that possibility and he removed the thermistor possibly to better gain access to the light switch and questioned its purpose..that’s what I got from it

Yes, I want to change out the illuminated switch for one that is a dimmer. The bezel is difficult to remove, and I don’t want to break it.
Thanks for the thermister answer. I had no idea that these even existed…..

Ah, I see now. I was misinterpreting the picture. I thought it was all one plastic unit, taken off the wall and hanging from the wire.

No, that would defeat its purpose.

Two separate questions. What is this? (Hanging from wires,) and how to remove the cover of switch below to install a dimmer in its place.
Woohoo! Who's on first!? LOL 😂

It's a remote temperature sensor. The cover on the switch can be removed by prying on it from the back.

Boy your easy to amuse! The first question “what is this?” Was IMMEDIATELY and CORRECTLY answered with the second post…I simply then expanded on the post (hijacked) because of the awesome picture and the need to get the answer from the 2nd poster …I posted IMMEDIATELY after the 2nd post.
Really not that weird or funny but I’ve heard of people rolling on the floor to “Joani loves chachi”…(insert laugh track)

Glad I could entertain you

Was just reacting to all the assorted comments. Sorry, I’ll keep my “silliness “ to myself. 🤐
