Oven Operation

No, not tire related. No, not can I safely pull my camper. Just a dumb question. We have owned quite a few campers with ovens but I don't think we have ever fired one up. I think we might be camping Thanksgiving week and don't want to appear dumb to my wife who will ask me how to work the oven. I will attach a pic of our oven and the knob for the oven and perhaps some pity and discreet tips on over turning-on would be appreciated.

With mine, you push in Oven pilot light and use butane torch to light the pilot inside oven. The little rod thing at the rear!

I am guessing you didn't have a very good PDI when you were introduced to your new unit. If you refer to the owners manual for the stove it will give you detailed instructions on how to safely use it.

I suspect that my fifth wheel being a 2002 might have given you a hint I am not the first owner. I don't believe I got a manual for the stove/oven either.

Get a flashlight....

Get down on your knees in front of the oven...

Open door to oven...

Turn flashlight on...

Stick flashlight a few inches inside of oven about 1" above the bottom of the oven...

Align one eye with light of flashlight so that you can see the pilot mechanism (I use my left eye but I'm left handed)

At this point swap hands with the flashlight and pickup the butane match thingy..

Strike the match thingy and hold it to the pilot thingy...

Now let the flashlight go and reach up and turn the knob for the oven to Pilot ON and push it in... Hold it there for what will seem like an eternity but it's only a couple of minutes..

Don't let the match thingy go out...

Let go of the knob, but don't turn it off..

move the match thingy out of the way and check to see if the pilot light stays on..

If the pilot stays lit... you're good to go.. Remove hand, flashlight, head and match thingy.. turn the knob to the desired temperature

Remember if you turn the knob to OFF you got to start all over again..

If the pilot didn't stay lite... Repeat

You forgot that unless you're double/triple jointed you may need Mama to push the knob while you're stuffed awkwardly into oven trying to light the pilot with a flashlight in one hand & the lighter in the other.
Simply stated it's a huge PITA to light which is why the last 2 rvs the oven was omitted & drawers in its place, used the convection microwave instead.

I'm sorry. I should have said that if you post the make and model number it would make it much easier for people to help you!

It is a Suburban stove. I think I would have to disconnect the gas and pull it out to see any model or model number.

Javi had it. I use DW to manipulate the knob - got too many piece parts that are sort of semi stuck in whatever position they're in. You might note that I've used this method any number of times in broilers and ovens and received a hair "makeover" on my head, face and arms due to a buildup of gas in the oven/broiler area. Sometimes looked pretty cool, sometimes not....but it always stunk. So.....keep your important parts back a ways from the burner if turning it on....accidentally.

When I got out of the service, I resumed my employment at Standard Tube (made exhaust systems) and since they gave me my military time towards seniority, I bid on a welder job; became state certified MIG and stick. Anyway, stick welding was used to make repairs on leaky seams and the cold or sloppy welds had to be ground off. In those days, fringed blue jeans were a hot style. SPARKS turned my fringed jeans into cut offs; well Daisy Dukes for the most part and my legs were without a trace of hair. Wife thought it was kinda funny when I got home after work and they probably still talk about fringed jeans episode almost 50 years later.

What they all said^^^^. Plus, keep in mind that if it hasn't been lit in awhile you will need to hold that knob in for quite some time. Keep in mind that if the oven might be used again shortly then just turn the knob to 'Pilot" and leave the pilot lit. It uses darn little propane and will save you having to go through all this again.
Suppose if we bring a nice Mexicorn casserole we might get an invite?

George, don't be surprised if you end up having to take it apart and clean the tiny hole that feeds the pilot gas. It's a favorite spot for spiders to nest, I think they like the smell of the LP. Like Jim said above, it will take some time and when your standing on your head and your arms are all twisted arounds in two directions it will seem like forever.

I keep a long reach butane lighter with a flexible head on it. Comes in handy getting into grills, water heaters, etc. and keeps my face and arm hair far enough away to not get singed.

To Javi's great list I would add one thing:

Have a neighbor ready to come in and help you stand up - after spending 37 minutes contorting on the floor to light the oven, your back and knees will not work as intended - the neighbor can assist. oh, and make sure to ask the neighbor that is compassionate and useful - not the one who likes to laugh at you!

Don't worry - your back and knees will return to normal service in a week or so!

A quick tip: Turn on and light burner first - saves from holding the knob "in" FOREVER waiting on propane.

We have the Furrion - it's nice they finally put the spark doodad in the oven.
