Going to Wahsing Dc

We are going on a cross country trip from Ca to the east coast. Plaining on going to Dc and New York. Just wondering how you get into the cities without driving into all the madness. Don't want to look like a tourist LOL

For Washington DC I plan on staying here:
http://www.cherryhillpark.com/index....arkReviews.com
Some folks think it's a bit crowded but it has access to mass transit.

For NYC I'm looking at:
http://parks.westchestergov.com/crot...arkReviews.com
Per Google map it's 1 hour from Manhattan.

Or:
http://koa.com/campgrounds/newburgh/
They say tours depart from their campground. It's pretty far north of the city.

Don't have to be a member. If you are a member you will get 10% off your stay at any koa campground you stay at.

You don't have to be KOA to stay at Cherry Hill. We were there last month and enjoyed it. You get a discount if you are a Good Sam.

old timer, Howdy;

When I do travel and use a KOA I've found that they also give discounts for
AARP members and VFW, as well as a few others, call ahead or ask at the
desk when you check-in.

When you join KOA, the fee usually equals 1 night stay,

Usually a pretty good deal when the rest of the year you get a discount.

Quite a few campgrounds have a shuttle. Grey Lines Bus Tour is well worth the price. They give you a good overview of what's where. They also drop you at the various monuments, etc... No parking, no taxi fare.

We went cross country in '09. Used KOA, and I am now a VIP with the points I earned. With a membership you can enter your "profile" that includes your TV and RV, people and pets. Call ahead with your membership # and they will already know which sites you'll fit into. Any specific parks you have questions about feel free to PM me.

Back to the OP's question...we just returned from Washington, DC and used their transit system extensively. It is very easy to use. The streets are a nightmare with traffic so buses can be slow at times but the Metro is great. We also used Taxis a few times and the cabbies were all very nice and helpful.

Glad you had a good time. Never been to a city like New York before. I have been to San Francisco because I live close to there but N.Y is way different. No driving into the city for me will stick to the metro. Thanks for the advice.

Use metro while traveling into DC. Cherry hill has decent access to metro stations as does little Bennett regional park in clarksburg md. Virginia campgrounds I'm not sure of. Check Metro's website and see what stations near these campgrounds have decent parking. Only 1 campground is within the capital beltway that I know of and that's cherry hill. As I'm writing this I'm getting blasted with "breaking news" as a shooter found his way into the capital. No need to worry, DC is as safe as it can be. Enjoy your visit and while your here you should check out the regions civil war history. Gettysburg, Antietam ,Fredericksburg,Bull Run are all in decent driving distance.

Yes if you're around DC there are lot of Civil War sites. I did some business in Taneytown MD last year and stayed in Gettysburg. I had time to tour Gettysburg for a couple of after noons. That was my second visit there and I'm wanting to do it again.

Ditto on all there is to do. In DC once you take the metro to the National Mall you can walk to many of the museums. If you have time check out the Udvar-Hazy Air & Space Museum in Chantilly. IRT Battlefields I think Antietam and Gettysburg are the most important ones to see if you are limited on time. Enjoy.

So just for the sake of conversation...how much time are you planning for this trip? Are you looking for places to see on the way? Do you want to get on the freeway and fly, or take your time and see some "back country"? There's a lot to see in this great country.

RVing in Washington DC? Cherry Hill RV Park. It is on the east side of the capitol right off the beltway. I cannot say enough about it unless it has changed drastically since we were there. The amenities were top notch, you can take the Metro bus from the park to the subway. We will return there.

We just came back from a weekend trip there. We stayed at cherry hill and drove to the nearest metro station (maybe 10 min.) and took that into the D.C. area (about half hour trip). There are busses but at the time it was easier to just drive to the metro station, with free parking on weekends. Cherry Hill campground has a lot of amenities but the sites are very small and kind of disappointing. That being said we spent a lot of the day visiting D.C. so the sites worked.
