Awning Removal to clean?

I read some good tips on here related to cleaning the awning. Mine is a power awning and I was just wondering if can be easily removed for cleaning? Anybody done this?...

Bleach and soapy water. open the awing apply with brush (wear and old shirt and shorts and glass of course) Roll up awing and leave for about an hour. Open awing and wash off with a hose. if you have any tought spot repeat. A lot easier than removing.

Sounds good. Thanks! Yes, I imagined it would be easier to roll-it-up with cleaning solution in it than it would be to remove it altogether. Looking forward to trying it, although not really looking forward to a soapy-bleach shower.

awning cleanup

I found out the hardway. Everytime it rains, eventhough my awning it closed. Water still gets inside. So on a sunny day after the rains. Roll it out (open it) and let it dry. If not you will get mold.

X2 - I usually hit mine with a long handled brush as well. One tip I have is : After each camping trip I open the awning when I get home and rinse off the topside of the awning to remove dust and ashes from the campground. I then let it air dry before closing. One thing I found is that when it rolls up, whatever dirt is on the topside of the fabric, this dirt comes in contact with the underside (white) fabric as it is being rolled up. The dirt, sap, leaves, etc then stick to and stain the white side.

Btw, I couldn't imagine removing the awning to clean it. It is actually fairly easy to clean the topside of the fabric while on the roof.

I had put the solution of bleach soap and water into a sprayer and have sprayed it onto the awning and roll it up for 1 hour and I have had good results with just rinsing it off. Good for normal use if it has tree sap or stains srubbing will need to be done.

Curious about the bleach. Won't it discolor the tarp colors?

No, bleach solution applied properly and thoroughly rinsed has not color damaged my awning.

Great idea! What ratio of bleach/water do-you use?

The Operating Instruction sheets for any of the awnings have the cleaning instructions on them. Here is a link to the first one I found:

http://www.dometic.com/a48c3d06-6bed...94be7d1b.fodoc

The cleaning instructions and soap/bleach/water mix are all on page 4.

Great info... Thanks! Just goes to show that it's good to read all those boring manuals.

To stop the rain getting into the rolled up awing try install a 2 liter soder bottle over each end. I have been told that this works. Its one of the things i will try when we get ours back from the dealer.

Thanks to the good tips here, I have a spiffy clean awning. Now…here's one additional ingredient some of you young'uns might not know about: elbow grease . After spraying mine off, I used a rag to wipe down both sides of the awning and that helped quite a bit. Any residual dirt and/or mildew came off pretty easily. I'm quite pleased with the results.
