50 Amp Rig - 30 Amp Service: Surge?

I'm a REAL newbie...haven't even made the maiden voyage yet (coming up Memorial Day weekend). I've been reading, studying, and learning all I can so I can learn from everybody else's mistakes (although, I'm sure I'll make plenty of my own!). One thing I've learned so far is don't go without a surge suppressor. I understand if I get a portable one (which is what I'll probably get initially), then if I have 50 amp service, it just plugs into the service and I plug my power cord into it. Easy. But if I have 30 amp service, I need a 'dog bone' (trying to learn the lingo!) that I plug into the service and plug my 50 amp power cord into that. Can I put my 50 amp surge suppressor between the dog bone and my power cord, or do I need to get a separate 30 amp surge suppressor?

Just the first of many questions, I'm sure! Thanks for your help!

You'd need a 30 amp male to 50 amp female. This plugs onto the power pedestle. Your surge protector would be next and then your 50 amp RV cord. No need for a 30 amp surge protector. You can always practice in your drive way to get a head start! Good luck!

Will a 50-amp surge protector operate on a 30-amp circuit? Those intelligent protectors with all the built in circuit monitoring may throw some errors on a 30-amp supply?

Using a 50A surge suppressor on a 30A supply will cause no issues. It's analogous to using a 12/3 extension cord when you could get by with a 16/3 cord......not exactly, but you get the point hopefully.

Remember, the surge protector is NOT your overload protection, that is taken care of by the circuit breakers in the breaker panel. The surge protector is looking for obviously power surges, but also open neutrals, over voltage, under voltage, something other than 60Htz frequency, loss of ground protection, and improperly wired power pedestals.
