Diesel fuel pumps

Happy new year to all,,, question for the diesel folks I’ve been reading allot about CP4 fuel pumps coming apart. I have a 2016 powerstroke does anyone know if this engine has this pump and if so what type of lubricant additive do you add to your fuel to help lubricate the pump

I think it does.

I use Opti-Lube XPD at the premium dosing rate.

Your 2016 Powersrroke has the CP4 fuel pump... this.. IMO is the best additive to add to your fuel tank and will increase lubricating the fuel pump... Diesel fuel contains sulfur and the CP4 fuel pump isn’t fond of it...

https://www.howesproducts.com/products/diesel-treat

There are several other additives out there such as Stanadyne but Howes is really good stuff...

Also make sure you are doing regular fuel filter changes ...

Lastly...,any folks install a FASS lift pump system... to prevent tearing up the engine

This is highly rated, used in our 2001 Ram CTD, haven’t yet on the 2016.

Well again in 2021 model year Ford will be the only one using the Bosch CP4.2 HPFP. Ram is switching back to the CP3 it sounds like it has been modified to have increased line pressure. Ram used the CP4.2 for 2019 and 2020. It sounds like if a Ram owner has a HPFP failure on a 2019 or 2020 they are installing the improved CP3.
GM uses a Denseo HPFP.

I just watched a video on 2021 ram 2500/3500 and yes it has the new cp3 pump.My truck was built in Nov/2020.
I would have waited for 2021 as that is the only significant change from the 2020.
I watched the videos about how Ram was using the cp4.2 in 2020 to correct the problem and “ here’s what to look for to make sure you have a cp4.2”...

I thought Ram was “all in” on “making the perfect cp4.2 pump” when in reality they were already sourcing a complete replacement

I feel duped.. if they replace after a failure with a cp3 that’s great but.....I may be on the side of a highway in Tennessee with a fifth wheel attached to my truck when it happens.
They should just do a recall
They wanted to use up all of the cp4.2 pumps they had sitting on the assembly line before changing over.

Yes diesel fuel contains sulfur, but not near as much as previously. That's why it's labelled as ULSD, Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel.
That ball bearing test is interesting. It has been around a while. Was written in 2007 and I don't think I would place 100% confidence in it.

After speaking to a Ford diesel machanic .. I was told these issues were taken care of in 2014 but to be in the safe side will be using the Opti-Lube XPD Formula Diesel Fuel Additive.. thanks again for all responses

My '13 Duramax manual stating "no fuel additives required" however I added Diesel Kleen or Howes occasionally, about every 4th to 6th tank full, not so much for the lubrication but for the bactericide in those additives. Diesel fuel with condensation create bacteria, your fuel filter traps the moisture but not the bacteria.

I use PowerService diesel Kleen, but to my knowledge it doesn’t contain a biocide. I got a bad batch of fuel 6 years ago and I’m still dealing with the effects. Had to rebuild my pump, replaced all injectors, $1500.00. Then before I could drop and clean the tanks the paradise fire burnt my sons house. I had to “throw it together” so I could move it for parking.

I used power service biocide at the beginning of this whole fiasco, I’m hoping to get it all fixed before summer.

I used Opti lube on last f350. I did not have any problems using it for years.
I am still under warranty in current truck, so to be safe I use only the ford additive. Sold at dealers around 6-8 bucks a bottle. as I recall named PM 22 normal use. PM 23 winter blend. My thinking if any problems happen I am using what they sell. Instead of fighting over brand X additive caused the problem.
Not attempting to sell anything or give advice. Just what I do and did.

I've used the Motorcraft PM-22 since 2011, on my first diesel (2011 F250) and since I've owned my 2016 F350 Dually (I purchased it in June 2017). After reading the above linked test results, I'm seriously thinking about changed it up to the Opti Lube summer plus and then the Opti Lube XPD during the late fall/winter months. I don't drive the truck a lot during the winter months, so t hat may work well for me.

Cummins approves diesel Kleen...I purchased a bottle but I’m a little Leary about using because of the cp4 issues. If a injection pump fails is there anyway for them to tell your using additives? My owners manual says no additives necessary except when extreme cold, then a Mopar anti gel additive is ok

I've heard quite a few nightmare stories about fuel pump failures when the Ford 6.7 diesel came out but I've never used an additive on mine. And I've never had an issue in over 191K miles (so far). I do run an extra set of filters (DieselSite) just as a precaution to catch any water that may be present.
