Washington DC/ Myrtle Beach

We are trying to plan our vacation for next year, we just spent Memorial day week at Willow Tree outside of Myrtle beach, it was nice very relaxing and we had a really great time in the area. Only real issue was lack of shade, there was only a small section that had tree's and the rest was open. We are trying to figure out if we want too go back to Myrtle beach or trying the almost double in mileage too Washington DC.

So my question is, I need imput on campgrounds around the Washington DC area, and the most popular 3 at Myrtle beach (Pirateland, Lakewood and Ocean lakes). We like full hook up, easy in and out of the site, I hate tring too park my camper in a shoe box area, area's that have tree's and shaded campsites.

We live in NE Georgia so I've towed too Myrtle beach, so I also look for those that have towed the route I would need to use to get to Washington DC.

Thanks Guys, and gal's

We just stayed at Myrtle Beach Travel Park for 8 days. They have both shade and sunny (near the beach spots). This was our first time there in our own trailer, but we've rented both trailers and villas there several times. We like the location, it's toward North myrtle beach, so the opposite end from the 3 you mentioned. They have a basic pool with a lazy river, but we spent most of our time at the beach.
have fun planning!

pirateland

Huge park, small spots, tightly packed. Stayed last summer with grand kids . No shade near ocean front. They have spots 100% shade away from beach. Lots to do and a blast. Paddle boats, fishing, golf cart rental, great pool and wonderful lazy river. (no sharks)

Would we go back.....heck yes....IF grand kids were with us. They loved it. Amusement area 5 miles north and that was FUN!

Park is designed for volume and a lot of ins and outs daily.

I say these types of parks are "It is what is is "

We stayed at OceanLakes this summer. They have some shaded sights, most are not. The full hookups were great and the access to amenities on sight was superb.
We toured pirate land and it appeared more shaded but less up to date.
We also drove through Lakewood(near Pirate Land and Oceanlakes). It too was less desirable to our family.
The atmosphere at Oceanlakes is great. Family oriented and fun. We camped across from some old friends and made some new ones. Even helped a buddy from near my house when he cut his camp sight water line.
Will we be back? Absolutely!!

We are in Pirateland right now. This weekend will be the end of our month here. We love it. There are shaded sites a block or two from the ocean. The sites right by the ocean (where we are) are wide and, while they have no shade, they do have a covered area at all campsites except the pull thrus. See the photo below. I have camped here and at Lakewood and at Ocean Lakes in the summer and they are all crowded and busy at that time. Everywhere in Myrtle Beach is crowded and busy in the summer. I also like Ocean Lakes, though their ocean sites are not as wide as Piratelands and they lack a covered area. We originally chose Pirateland because they offered the best monthly rate of the three, but now we are planning return off season visits here. (We are retired empty nesters and don't need to come during the summer season).

I can also recommend Cherry Hill Park in College Park, MD. It is the closest campground to Washington DC. We were there last month and loved it. There is a Metro Bus stop at the campground to get to the Metro train for visits into DC.

Enjoy your trip!

Can't help with the CG's ... as far as getting to D.C. ... head West on 501
till you get to Pee Dee, S.C, head North on 301 until it hits I-95N, or just take
the by-pass around Marion (staying on 501), until it hits 301 then the same as
above.

Another vote for Cherry Hill Park (if you take camper to DC). We went about 7 years ago and I remember the CG was nice then, but we were so tired every night from all of the walking we did in DC, we just went to camper and slept each evening.

It has been one of our favorite vacations. We drove from Carrollton GA and it took about 12 hrs.

Campground in d.c. Area

I live in the washington area, if your planning on staying in a campground that you have acces to d.c. Look into little Bennett regional park. It's small, on state road 355 which is Wisconsin avenue more or less. Drop the trailer, drive to metro and take the train to d.c. Little Bennett is small, between Frederick and washington.

We stayed at the Myrtle Beach KOA in October. We loved it. Very shady, great staff, close to beach (3 blocks), close to restaurants and amusement park. Had to deal with an ant infestation (we didn't know)!!

Ocean Lakes

This place is just plain fun. We have been going for years, we book at least 1yr in advance allowing spot we love. People are awesome, have met many that consider friends over the years. If at all possible, bring your own golf cart, the rental is $.

Ocean Lakes has some shade, majority not though. In an off season, there should be spots in the trees, most of the cement pad sites are in the open though.

I've been researching and the KOA and Braircliff have sparked my interest along with Myrtle beach rv park

Briarcliffe RV Resort has some shade some not, all pads are concrete. Mostly oak trees here so some folks do not like the acorns falling on their roof during some parts of the year, never has bothered me. There is access to next door Barefoot Landing by a small side gate for (walking/bicycle/golf cart) only. Beach access is a few blocks away across Hwy 17. Could walk to it but a bit too far for my liking-- especially on a hot summer day. We ride bicycles over there often. Also possible to get there with a golf cart through the gate to Barefoot Landing. Briarcliffe is a member/public access rv park so there are some blackout dates where members get priority for reservations.

We have stayed at Ocean Lakes in the past and if walking beach access was my priority it would be better, but we had to drive to get to anything else outside of Ocean Lakes -- and the traffic can be a real bear.

If my priority was walking beach access and LOTS of shade then we found that Myrtle Beach State park fit the bill -- AC & water at all spots but getting reservations for full hookups are a bit difficult -- some spots are really tight too.

It's all about choices and preferences

I suppose you can get some idea of the different areas by looking at google maps with the sat view.
