Modified my couch cushions

One gripe I had about the couch on my 2012 Cougar 29bhswe was the back cushions stuck out to far because of the metal bar that ran across the backside leaving only a little space to sit down and a 6-8" space between the cushions and the back wall.

So I took the cushions to a local upholstery shop here in town and had them split the seam and add fabric to the bottom of the cushion making an upside down 'U'. Now, the cushion fits over the metal bar that runs across the back of the couch, rather than in front of it. Only cost me about $70 per cushion and a few weeks in the upholstery shop, well worth it and makes the couch much more comfortable.

What is that bar? Our couch converts to an inflatable bed and does not have any bar.

J2J, that bar is the leg assembly for the bed. When the couch cushions come off, you grab that bar and pull it up and towards the kitchen, it flips the bottom of the couch over making a full size bed. Then you inflate and put the air mattress on it.

Thanks, fla-gypsy!

I'm glad I came across this. We just purchased our Springdale and my husband wanted to change out the sofa pillows because they take too much room. I'm now making slipcovers for the dinette & sofa cushions so I may bring this up to my husband to see if he may want to modify the pillows before I slipcover the pillows.

I showed my husband your pillow modification and I think he liked it. We might just give this mod a whirl.

With the mod when you sit can you feel the bar in your back or is half the cushion in that are enough to not feel it?

SAD, the bar is actually the leg support for the bed. When you remove the pillows and cushions, you grab the bar and pull up on it, the couch bottom is hinged and flips over towards the kitchen sink. The bar is now on the floor and forms the bed for the inflatable air mattress that's stored under the couch in the drawer. As for the cushion being too narrow now, you can sorta feel the bar, but it's not that bad. The room on the couch makes up for it, it's alot more comfortable, you don't feel like you're being pushed off the couch anymore.

If you guys do the mod, have the upholstery shop (or yourself if you're doing it) cut another inch into the cushion. I had them stop where the piping ended, so when I went to put the cushion over the bar, they hovered over the couch cushions about 3/8". I can push the pillows down and they look great, but it would've been nice to just rest them on there and they wouldn't float.
