TP Warning
From another forum:
Quote:
For those of you who are not aware, Angel Soft toilet paper has changed to "Stronger and Softer design". What this means to us RV'rs is that it no longer breaks down in the holding tanks. We had heard about some people having issues but since we had not and the package still says it is septic safe, ignored what we had heard. Well yesterday, we also had our dump line stop up when dumping and had to back flush the line to get it loose. Since we used a Camco back flush system with a gate valve on the end, we could hook a hose up with the gate valve closed and put back pressure on the stoppage to get it to break loose. Never actually saw the stoppage but when it broke free, allot of paper followed. We have had this same rig for almost 7 years and have used Angel Soft toilet paper for the past 10 years and never had this issue. So today we did the "toilet paper shake test" to see if Angel Soft would break down in a jar of water when shook for 5-10 seconds and it failed to break down. Apparently we have been lucky since they changed their design, until now. So we are switching to either Dollar General or Scott brand paper as both past the shake test and break down after as little as 3 seconds of shaking. Angel Soft is no longer an option for RV use.

I have always used Scott with no problems.
Maybe next purchase I'll re-read the package.
All TP's are septic safe now, I guess, but that doesn't mean it will
break down in the RV's commode.
Thanks for the info!
Jo

We`ve always use POM brand from Sam`s club. It states it`s septic safe as well. So far, no issues. Although I might think about changing brands, POM is getting a little rough on the behind.

I started with the Scott 1000 roll. Something changed recently and it's no longer as soft as before. Now we use another Scott 1-Ply that's textured/thicker/softer. It seems to break up pretty well in water. I believe it's their Extra Soft.

I use whatever the wife buys and she has never asked me if one was better than the other. Never been a problem either. I suspect it really doesn't matter as long as you properly hydrate the black tank.

Our city actually sent out a notice telling us those wipes were backing up at the sewage plant and they were actually having to remove them at the plant! They said, please, please don't put them in the toilet.

I think there is a HUGE difference between "septic safe" and RV friendly! Septic safe means it will eventually degrade in water. RV friendly means it will RAPIDLY degrade in water! Remember, a septic tank has a LOT of bacterial action going on, and it can take months to break down solids without a problem. In the RV we don't have that luxury - and need TP to break down in a matter of hours!
Be careful with the wipes - a LOT of them are NOT flushable - read the carton before you buy!

That's pretty interesting. I "know" a person that is involved with sewage plants via another forum. I'm going to reach out to him about this and see what he has to say.

For the "just in case", I carry one of those back flush gizmos.
