Jerry can ideas

Good Afternoon
We are starting to plan for a several month long road trip around the county to include Alaska (if the border ever opens). Our TV is an NV with a 28 gal. fuel tank. While towing the travel trailer this will put us right around a 200 mile range. I am trying to come up with some ideas to increase my fuel carrying ability in order to give me some more breathing room in the out of the way places. I haven't really seen any options for a bigger fuel tank for the NVs so I'm leaning towards jerry cans. All the options I have seen to mount them on the van require a different bumper and a big $$$ upgrade. I have given some thought to going to a lithium setup and moving them inside the TT and mounting jerry cans at the battery location. Has anyone tried anything like this? I would be interested in entirely new ideas as well. Thanks.

You might consider a cargo carrier on the rear bumper of the TT.

I would seriously look into a front mount hitch from draw-tite or Curt. Add a tray and strap the fuel and what have you to the tray. Make sure the hitch is good for 500 lbs payload and 5000 lbs towing capacity. The tray should be good for 500 lbs as well.
Make sure the hitch is vehicle specific and it shouldn't take long to hook into the frame.
Lots of videos on etrailer and youtube when mounting this style of hitch.
Moving the batteries is work, as you need to run wire to the breakers for the major components and you need to put batteries in a box and vent.

Good luck

I don't know what a Nissan NV is, but what about a roof rack and place fuel in that. The shorter square fuel can/bottles might work better up there. Four 2.5 gals would handle on/off roof better. Many years ago, I placed the trailer spare tire and 2 of that size fuel cans on top of a Pathfinder for a long trip. Never needed to remove any of that, but knowing they were there if needed was nice.

I had an old metal Milk Crate that I mounted ON Top of the rear bumper that held two fuel cans perfectly. Just son't hang anything out off of the bumper.

Jared, I had no idea what an NV was, but when I looked it up I was fairly amazed. Pretty good spec's. I would probably be inclined to go with Dan's idea of the rack on the front. Avoid the rack on the back of the RV at all costs. That is a bad idea. Voice of experience (And yes, I have driven to Alaska and back AND towing an RV).
