hot water heater

I have a 2011 Keystone Cougar, While using off shore generator, I switch the hot water switch to on it loads the generator "down." I bought this RV second "hand." I was informed everything "worked." heater seems -to have "LP." No sound from igniter solenoid, just loads down the generator

Welcome to the forum

Your water heater has 2 modes of operation. On Electric it will use 120VAC to heat an element in the tank. On LP mode it uses a flame to heat the water.

If your turning the electric side on while running the gen, your putting a load on it and the gen will bog down for a bit and should recover depending on size of gen and what else is on.

If you turn on the LP side it only needs 12VDC to ignite the gas. Most will use the gas function to save the available power for things like the air conditioner and microwave.

When on a 30 amp connection or when on generator power, we always turn the water heater and the fridge to gas only mode, and then manage the other loads to stay under the available power.

On my 2014 Cougar 337 FLS there a switch in the panel with all the other switches and controls for the slides. The switch in there is for the 12 volt control of the water heater. Down where the 12 volt fuses and breakers are is one breaker marked water heater. It’s the only way I have found to turn off the 120 volts for the water heater.

What kind of generator are you using, and is your Cougar a 30 amp or a 50 amp unit. And what else are you running on your camper off the generator at the same time?
