You will love SD.

I’d be careful not to go in August because of Sturgis Rally, Aug 6 - Aug 15 unless you’re taking your motorcycle.
Camping rates usually go up one week before and one week after rally as well.
Many riders go before rally or stay after rally.

Heed the road signs warning of height & width restrictions. If you are close I’d think twice about going on that road. Sometimes you don’t have a place to turn around when you decide you won’t fit.

Saw someone get a rental class C stuck in one of the one way only rock tunnels, maybe Eye of the Needle.
That stopped traffic on both sides for hours... on motorcycles we just turned around!

We have done 2 camping visits to Black Hills area. My wife discovered one called Mystery Mountain Resort.

Before the internet was so prevalent, she sent for a book from visitor's center for Rapid City and many campgrounds then claimed shade trees. Later when we drove by some they were 15' tall and not much shade. This place had tall pines. It looks like that can handle big rigs. We were there in a popup both times. It is centrally located and has some things for kids to do. We loved it so much first time we stayed there again on 2nd visit.

We went last year and we're going again this year. Last year we went about a week after Sturgis and stayed for 9 days at the end of Aug. Got some weather, rain thunder and hail but all in all a nice time. Stayed at Whispering Pines Campground in Silver city near Pactola Reservoir. Beautiful campground, loved the salt water pool. This year we wanted to go for 4th of July. Couldn't get reservations ANYWHERE. So, we moved out trip to the last two weeks of July. Being retired USAF, this time we are staying at Ellsworth AFB on the Famcamp. Enjoy your trip, Rushmore is something that has to been seen in person. I will give you a piece of advice. Leave the RV in the campground. Parking is scarce for bigger vehicles. Its free to tour the monument, but they charge for parking. Also, take a day and go to Deadwood and another to go see Crazy Horse Memorial We liked it so much, when my wife os ready to retire we are planning on moving to the Black Hills area.

We found CUSTER MEADOWS RV park just right for our 30ft Fifth wheel, nothing fancy or pricey . Very large spaces and close to everything.

Last year we spent a month at Lazy JD RV Park in Piedmont, SD. It is north of Rapid City and is between Rapid City and Sturgis. Has 120' long pull throughs, there are both gravel and grassy sites. We are going back again this year for a month and a half, we will be there during the Sturgis Rally. Nice older couple own and run it. No frills but, it is on a ranch surrounded by ranches. It has easy access from the Interstate but is a few miles from. The only noise we hear is an occasional moo or the famous SD winds that seem to blow all the time.
