axle bearing replacement

Just curious what you guys think, I've heard of people having problems with cheap chinese bearings installed by the manufacturer. I'm doing 2 trips coming up and probably going to do about 4,000 miles. So the drums are coming off and a full inspection is soon to be done. Here's the question, Since its apart anyway should I just plan ahead and put new Timken bearings in to be worry free. Or go with the old, if it aint broke dont fix it, mindset. My trailer is a 2014 keystone with 5200pd Al-Ko axles. It has somewhere around 5,000 miles on it. The drums have never been off since it was new so its time for a looksee and maybe some upgraded bearings. Any thougths?

I believe lm67048 and 25580 are the proper bearing numbers for me

I have done a LOT of axle services on a BUNCH of different units. I haven't replaced any bearings that aren't pitted or discolored.

Give the bearings, races and spindle a close look. If it all looks good, grease them with a quality product and enjoy your trip. Haven't had any comebacks or failures, it's all in doing it right.

That's what I did with mine. Give it a good inspection, regrease, new seals and enjoy 'til next time.

I had the same decision to make this spring. I finally decided that since I needed to completely clean out the factory grease since I did not know what brand it was and I did not want any grease compatibility issues, it was easier and faster to install new Timken USA bearings than having to clean all the existing grease from the China bearings. The cost of the new bearings were also offset with the reduced cost of the additional brake cleaner that I would have needed to clean the bearings.

...or "invest" in a solvent tank, which makes the process pretty quick and easy.

Oh yeah. A good excuse to visit Harbor Freight.
Soaking in diesel in a clean plastic pan, or disposable foil baking pan, will get you a good head start on cleaning them.
I would clean them real good. Look them over for any pits and any color...blue/purple. If all look good, re-pack and put them back in. They're not that old.
Buy a spare set and a seal.
