Hitch Head Storage

Hello Campers! I guess I just found the hitch head with my shin one time too many, so decided to come up with something to get it out of the way. I also was not too thrilled with having the thing take up space in the pass-through along with fighting the grease. I decided it would be out of the way on the A-frame. I used a 2" to 2 1/2" hitch adapter from Wally world to hold the hitch head. This way, I can use the locking pin to make sure I get to keep it. I drilled through both sides of the adapter in two places for 1/4" clearance and then used those holes to mark the #7 holes I drilled in the trailer frame. I threaded the #7 holes for 1/4-20 bolts, which will be plenty strong since the hitch head will be on the TV when traveling. (or so I hope) On the adapter, I drilled the holes on one side out to 1/2" which allowed me to use a 1/2" countersink bit to countersink the inside of the remaining 1/4" holes. This allowed me to mount the adapter to the frame using countersunk flathead allen machine screws so the hitch head would still go into the adapter. The hitch head slides in place, out of the way, and locks using the existing hitch lock pin. Oh, and while I was waiting for the paint to dry, I put a thermostatically controlled Fantastic Fan in the bedroom. (no picture; everyone knows what they look like.)

Gotta love it! Give a man an RV and he will make it better!! Great idea for solving a safety hazard.

Thumbs up

Great Job Port,
It looks store bought. That looks like one mod that will catch on quick.

I like your thinking...

However, when I had a travel trailer, I never removed my hitch head from the truck. Just never saw it as a problem to solve.

Nice execution!
I might adapt that under the trailer with the head facing down o it's out of the elements during storage.
Thanks for sharing!

I liked the idea so much I decided to add it to mine too. Sick of kicking the receiver with my foot on the garage floor all the time. Thanks for the mod.

Talking Cover for hitch head

For anyone who is interested, Lowes sells a grey plastic bucket, kind of rectangular with rounded corners, that fits down perfectly over the hitch head in the holder making it protected from the weather. Thanks too for all the kind words, campers.

Would there be any problems welding this in place?
