Leaf Spring Replacement
Just returned from long trip with our Keystone Raptor 300MP and found rear passenger side leaf spring broken. Original springs were rated at 3000#, 25.25" length. The axle is rated at 6000# capacity. I've found a replacement rated at 3500#, 25.25" Length. I would like to increase the capability of the toy hauler so my trike can be aboard and the springs can handle it. Will I have any problems with handling?

If the new springs are the same length I don't see any issues. You'll have to keep in mind that the AXLE will still only have a 6000# rating.

Last month I completed the Dexter EZ-Flex upgrade on my TT and replaced the 4 leaf springs with 5 leaf springs (from eTrailer.com) at the same time. Replacing the springs was recommended by a fellow Outback Trailer owner. He suffered a broken spring once so he has replaced the springs on his last two trailers.
Like chuckster said, the axle will still be 3000#... so it may now be the weakest link. But I don't see any problems with handling. I have only seen improvements and peace of mind with my new springs.

Good point! If it were me I would consider replacing the 6000# axles with Dexter 7000# axles which is what is on my 2010 fusion 302. I'm just saying if it were me and I had taken it apart that far. No question then.

Keep in mind it's not only the distance eye to eye but the height of the spring as well. If the heavier springs have more arch, the RV will sit higher. Also due to the fact that they have more capacity they will not squat as much under weight, again causing the RV to sit higher. The difference may be minimal, but something to consider since it will raise your center of gravity. Could also be a concern for someone who is vertically challenged, especially if you have a 3 step entrance. I'm not real familiar with the different Raptor models so don't know if it's a double or triple axle, but regardless, if you change one, change all.

If you are going to change the ratings of a spring on a multi axle trailer, you need to change all the springs. The stiffer (higher rated springs) will deflect less under load, and cause the equalizers to be much less effective. You can overload the axle with the stiffer springs - more so on 3 axle setups.
