WDH Hitch recommendations

Good evening to the tribe....

Upgrading from our Passport 28BH is the very near future.
Kiddos are growing up too darn fast!!! Moody teenage girls and a smelly teenage boy in the camper now.
Our current Equalizer WDH hitch is for a 10,000 GVW/1,000 TW

New trailer will be around 1200lbs.
Any recommendations on WDH's other than Equalizer.

The dealership I work for sells the eaz-lift r3 and r6 hitches with our deliveries. Mainly the r3 ones. They have been great the last few years. Not cheap flimsy bars on these.

Buy new bars for the Equalizer and be done with it. They make 1200lb. bars and you still have the best out there other than Hensley/ProPride.

The hitch itself is marked for 10,000/1,000
Simply adding new bars passes muster?

The new bars aren't thicker/beefier?

New trailer is 10,075lbs empty and 1210 lbs tongue weight

Unless something has changed, and you could check with Equalizer, the shank for a 10k hitch and up is the same for as for a 14k. The only thing that changes after that is the bar. I did the same thing back in 2014 after talking to them and the dealer; upgraded bars for a heavier trailer and also had to get a hitch with more drop when I upgraded trucks.

When we upgraded to our current trailer, we kept the Eaz-Lift Trekker and just upgraded the bars. Like the Equalizer, the head is rated for 14,000 lbs. and the only change is the bars. As long as you are happy with your current hitch, just get heavier rated bars.

I cannot recommend an Andersen hitch enough. After going through 4 setups in the past 20 years, finally landed on an Andersen and will never use anything else.

On the fly adjustments are easy and only takes a socket (supplied with the kit)
Anti-sway is amazing
Super quiet
Weight distribution is amazing and isn't nearly as bouncy as other torsion bar setups, etc.
Setup and tear down is very quick and easy
No need to unhook during backup
No more greasy lubrication points
Can easily fit in a small box in the bed of the truck or RV storage when not in use

I have a Curt 17501 good for 15 K and 1500# bars. I got a 2 1/2 inch shank to fit in my receiver without a sleeve. It comes with a 2". I am very satisfied with it.

IIRC, hitch head differs between the 10K and 12K Equal-i-Zers, as do the bars. You would need essentially an entire new hitch. As I found out, the head also differs between 12K and 14K, however, the bars are the same.

I believe this is a moot point anyway since you state your new trailer is 10,075 lbs EMTPY, If that's really the case, a 12K hitch isn't going to cut it. You should be looking at 14K...perhaps a 16K, depending on how heavy the trailer will be loaded up. 1,210 lbs of dry tongue weight can easily be over 1400 lbs when you load the trailer.

Figure 13% of your trailer's GVWR for TW and size the hitch appropriately from there.

The OP would need to contact Equalizer for the latest and greatest specs but when I talked to them in 2014 they told me once you got to the 10k hitch the hitch head was rated for 14k from 10k - 14k, they did not make different, specific hitch heads for every 2k lbs.

Yeo, call them uo for sure. Just relaying what their CS told me in 2021. I know their shanks are stamped 10-14k, never saw anything stamped on the 10, 12 or 14 heads i’ve had though.

It's hard to beat the Equal-i-zer 4 point for what it does and the price, ease of hitching, weight, and maintenance. Why go with anything else that has more parts, more adjustments, and more headaches. If you have trouble getting those bars on the L-bracket on the trailer frame, then crank the truck and trailer higher and you'll be able to simply lift them on the L-bracket with your little finger. I use to lift mine with my foot. Crank it higher and you won't have to use the cheater bar at all. You already have the best? why change?

I thought you just had to change the ball and the bars to go up in weight.
I hope to learn from this since I also have the 10K Equilizer.
