Florida Hurricane again projected

Regretfully the NWS has projected hurricane Ian's landfall dead south of Tallahassee. I know Danny winters in the area and probably a few more I don't know about. And of course it is to be a large hurricane, possibly a three or four.
To quote a now famous police sergeant "Be careful out there."

I've been watching the development of the hurricane, although I have some significant distance between me and Florida right now, I still have concern for the folks who will be in it's path.

Right now, campgrounds are thinning out a bit in the Northern States, especially through the middle of the week. School is back in session everywhere, and now is a great opportunity to catch some cooler weather, and still enjoy green foliage on the trees. ..... Head North! Close up your homes, secure everything, take the camper and head North for a few days.

In Indiana the night temperatures are rocking between the 50's and the 60's, days are pleasant low '70's to low 80's. This makes for absolute magnificent camp fires at night, great temperatures for hiking and sightseeing, and makes for fantastic sleeping weather.

So, why not take advantage of the opportunity! No doubt businesses will be closed soon, folks will abandon the area anyway. Especially, if you do not have kids in school, wow! I would not hesitate a heat beat to skee-daddle for a week and let Mother Nature run her course.

Yes, wouldn't you know it. They just had Michael down there 3-4 years ago and I think it was a cat 5 - some of those areas hardest hit still have a long way to go to come back. This one looks like it's going to hit dead center where we always stay. I'm hoping it drops back to a less intense storm before it hits. DD lives in Tallahassee and she said the state (she works for them) and city both are warning residents to get prepared. We stay about 30 miles due S right on the coast. Bad thing is that it looks like it might hit just a bit E of there and we have a week set up at some waterfront cabins with DD in Cedar Key for Dec. 1. It would be the pits for it to get it all. I know there are others that either live or winter in that area so be careful and hopefully it won't be anything like Michael was for Mexico Beach.

I winter in Florida in a gated community 30 miles east of Tampa elevation 50 feet . The forecast is calling 500 miles wide for Ian . Florida has been socked for a month. I hope the weather guys are hyping this storm to cover there back side .

Lots of different models out there. I saw one this morning that put landfall at Tampa Bay at 1400 hours on Thursday, 9/29/22 with a 10 foot storm surge. We are in Orlando and Lakeland every Thursday but we have cancelled for this week due to the storm.

is there any special insurance requirements for rvs in the hurricane zone? i know some boat and yacht insurance requires the boats to be out of florida and north of a specific line from june til Nov 1st i think unless you have a rider attached to your insurance…then they give specific rules on how to secure it during the storm

Jim it looks like the projection of the hurricane has changed. Are you in Clewiston? Looks like it might be headed straight for you. You are further inland which will help a lot but watch out for falling trees and flooding. Good luck and be careful.

Luckily we are still in Wisconsin, but the Suites is in Okeechobee. Probably just rain and a little wind hopefully. It is the flooding I'm concerned about. The RV is about 75 yards from one of the local canals.

I would suspect there's pretty good drainage going toward the lake if water started to rise. You'll be a long way from any kind of tidal surge but I believe they are forecasting significant rain. It would take a LOT of rain for water to rise that much so I bet it will be OK. Good luck.

Predicted a slow forward path across Florida. Being compared to Harvey which dumped feet of rain on Houston.

I worked Hurricane Charley as a deputy in 2004 in Sanibel. It was bad. This storm was much larger and brought more rain with it. I have friends in the highway patrol that are down there now in Hardee County and one of them took a video of an RV park that was about 3 feet underwater still today. Unfortunately I can't access the link to that one. If I can though I will post it later.

We are currently in Mt Airy, NC, in a campsite on private property. Just the one campsite, in the woods, "far from the noise of the city". The rain is just now starting and the winds are light and "just breezy".

The hurricane is supposed to track just a couple miles east of Mt Airy sometime late tonight/early tomorrow morning, likely directly over us. Winds are expected to be around 30MPH with gusts to 50MPH and heavy rain, coming in patches. I "double chocked the trailer" and made sure all the jacks are down and locked. If it gets really bad, I plan to hitch the truck to the trailer, but don't expect that will be needed. We were in several "sand storms and wind storms" while out west, and those had winds gusting to 60-70 MPH with no issues with trailer movement (other than rocking and flapping slide covers).

Hopefully, by the time this thing passes us, it'll just be a nice welcome for the farmers who have been wanting more rain to finish the growing season.

We have 3 families that are close friends that live in about 20 miles from each other in a line west of Orlando. One family lost their pool enclosure, the other 2 evacuated and haven't been back yet. My godson and his family were camping in Disney. They were evacuated to a Disney hotel by Disney with the camper left in the campground. They have not been able to get back to their camper yet.

Was talking to my cousin in WV today making plans to camp around Parkersburg and see them next week. She has a second home near where the storm came ashore. She hasn't been able to get in touch with anyone down there to see what's left of her house. I feel for the Floridians and expect a large casualties as a lot of folks down there choose to "ride out" the storms. So far it looks like this was a historic storm.

We haven't gotten there yet but will probably go visit some of the affected areas when we do get there. I live where we only see very high winds or tornados. I always thought tornados were the worst of the two until I started seeing the devastation these hurricanes can bring. A cat 4 or cat 5 can bring unimaginable damage. This will be the 4th where our trips there have taken us into the immediate aftermath of one of these things.

After Hurricane Michael hit Mexico Beach FL we were there about a month later. When they talk about "gone", it was literal...only foundations. RVs were in trees. Unimaginable. I've never understood with the advance warning why anyone would stay in the path of one of those things as you aren't going to do a thing to help anything. Talked to some folks there and they mentioned some that had decided to stay. There when it hit, gone along with the home when it subsided. The surge just comes in like a tsunami, gathers up everything into the big wave then slides back offshore..."stuff" and people in it.

Our prayers are with these folks and those trying to help them. We don't know anyone that was in the direct line of the hurricane as all our good friends and family were spared on the path of this one.

my house had 5 ft of water in it during hurricane isabelle…we have since had the house raised 10’ in the air….wouldn’t have helped with this surge though…amazing how powerful nature is

Our little cottage home in Zephyrhills was sparred . It’s a 1992 double wide in a gated Community. My cousin went to clubhouse spending the night there it’s hurricane built. I will be going to you Florida this year and not having to rebuild. The estimate is 2.5 million snowbirds a lot of them Canadians are advised against coming over to Florida.
