With the heat pump if the thermostat is set 3-5 degrees above the ambient temperature the furnace will fire up with the heat pump til the temperature catches up then only the heat pump will run. If at night the temperature inside drops due the heat pump not keeping up the furnace will start.
The heat will only be efficient to about 40 degrees outside before it begins to blow cold air.
