Cutting a Memory Foam Mattress

Our Alpine came with a 70"x80" mattress, we put a 4 inch topper on it but after about 4 straight months of using it it is worn out. The mattress has sagged too. We used an electric carver to trim the topper down to 70" when we got it. We want just get a Memory Foam Mattress. Wondering if anyone has trimmed down a whole Memory Foam Mattress that way or any other way for that matter.

A memory foam topper isn’t typically isn’t inside a cover, so you can cut it to fit and just lat it over the base mattress. A memory foam mattress is almost always inside a cloth outer cover that is sewn closed. I suppose you could cut it open, peel back the cover, trim it to size, pull the cover back into place, sew it closed and trim off the extra fabric cover.

However, you need to select the right mattress since many memory foam mattresses incorporate an edge bolster to provide edge support and rigidity. If you cut that off to make the mattress narrower, one or the other of you might find yourselves rolling off the edge of the bed.

Good quality RV King memory foam mattresses are not overly expensive, so why not get one made to fit?

The 70"x80" size makes it expense. Cheapest I have seen is around $500

Just want to clarify it was a Mattress not a Topper right you cut right? Both of the ones we have in the house have the removable covers so I will check em out.

Yeah we had to do the same thing with our 4" topper.

Yes, we've cut down two 10in foam mattresses. And we've cut down two 8in foam mattresses and two 2in foam toppers (over the course of three RVs). Used what we call an electric turkey carving knife ($10-$15). All but the 10in were an easy clean cut. The blade was too short to make a clean cut in the 10in, but it was still a serviceable job. All but one mattress had a zippered cover. The other one needed a Frankenstein stitch to close it up. The sheets will hid any stitching you have to do.

By the way, the blades will get hot(ish) cutting through a 10in mattress. Let them cool down periodically.

We bought the carver for the same reason have already cut two toppers works great. The pedestal in the 5er is pretty high so we are probably gonna go with a 8" mattress.

Finally got around to doing this, bought a California King. It is advertised as being 10" but is really only 9". We cut 4" off the end then flipped it over and pulled out the slack on the cover and used 12 4" safety pins to hold it that way. We put that end at the headboard. It felt almost too firm even though it was supposed to be medium-firm so we put the 3" memory foam topper that we had from the old mattress on it. It is a little on the tall side. We spent the night in the 5er just to check it out. Slept great.

Also you could trim down the pedestal height to lower the mattress down a bit so it isnt so high up... We did that years ago on our Alpine.. dropped the overall height of our memory foam mattress about 5 inches so wife dont need a step stool to get into bed..
