Ram 1500 w/ GD 150 series 5th wheel

Watching Casey's Off road recovery getting a fellow unstuck. Seem like a lot of camper for a 1500
Dodge sport model. Shouldve bought better tires, and stayed closer to the pavement.

Well......? What can you say? Left behind the door when brains were passed out? Nah, someone slammed it back while he was behind it and scrambled what he had. Sheesh.

There are so many things wrong with what that individual did, where he chose to go, the truck, the trailer he put on the truck....where do you begin? At least one of the guys from the rescue vehicle tried to point out what I'm sure was part of the guy's thinking; "does that racing stripe give you more horsepower"? Haaa! I guess the guy thought so. Ignorance was not, and should not be considered, the cause here. It was simple stupidity - all the signs, flags and warnings were there that this would happen....and it did.

I truly hope insurance doesn't cover a dime of the damage. Like racing etc. that they don't cover, this was a situation that should have never been.

While I won’t argue that it’s a lot of trailer for the truck, we’d have never seen this video if he hadn’t been 5 miles off the grid going boondocking where he shouldn’t have been. Stock tires and suspension might be ok there going for a drive around, but towing a fiver? Yeah, no. For two years I was in a similar situation on truck and trailer, but even this old dimwit didn’t have stock tires and would have never dreamed of taking it where he was. What a stupid abuse of a truck and trailer.

Surprised the guy couldn't power through the deep sand! Hemi, hood scoop and 20HP racing stripes! Zoom Zoom. Wonder if I could get racing stripes and a hood scoop for my clunker and as Tim Allen once said, "MORE POWER"!

So one needs to ask, did you ever weigh that combination? If you did how bad were your weights?
I state this all the time one of the best features of a 5er is also why many end up with overweight combinations. That being they are inherently stable, no sway, maybe a little push in curves.
When one gets close to weights with a TT, it starts telling you that, but with a 5er not so much.

He certainly had "more than enough power" because the rear tires were still turning and the truck was jumping, so that "hemi" was proving it could tow anything... Problem might have been that "awesome front bumper"... Did you see those corner lights ???? They could light up the entire desert to show where the truck was pointing... Problem was, he'd have to walk there, cause the tires were turning but the trailer's anchor was "digging in too deep".....

I did. I was 389# over payload fully loaded for camping. Also, if I remember right, about 400# under GRAWR. That was with a pretty light load in the trailer and nothing but me, DW and pup in the truck. It was NOT ideal, but it was what we had. The truck was replaced last fall, and the fiver this spring. I agree with your comments. The setup towed amazingly well and never did it feel like the tail wagging the dog, even in an emergency stop situation last summer. With that said, I knew when the lease was up on the 1500 that I would be moving to a heavy duty truck.

Yup, and it's not limited to trucks and trailers. Videos abound of idiots doing the same thing with milloin dollar+ motorhomes. Videos also abound of idiots doing all sorts of stupid things by using something inapropriatley or for a purpose not even remotley close to what it was designed for. Thn the idiot is typically suprised by the results.

If you throw gasoline on a fire you should not expect it to go out even though it is a liquid and so is water. Common sense doesn't seem to be on the rise these days.

I'm going to assume (there's that word) that the 1500's owner let loose with a string of words that would make a sailor blush. And then repeated those words when he got the bill. He's like a whole group of stupids all wrapped into one.

What got me was the access road through all that brush; surprised he hadn't stripped the paint off the sides and broke all the plastic on top not to mention tearing his rubber roof.

This. I cringed watching the drive to where he was stuck. I would never dream of hauling my fifth wheel through that. If I wanted to do that, I’d buy a used truck camper. No way I’d beat the crap out of my rig getting back there.

We had just crossed the Colorado heading north to Hanksville Utah and wanted to stop for a leg stretch. There was a big turnout but when I pulled in I immediatly started sinking into deep gravel chips where the highway department had stock piled gravel for a chip seal. I still had momentum enough and cobbed the throttle and powered on through it.
That could have been an expensive tow bill right there.

That rig looks a lot like mine.
