Weighted tag prices..
Just to be safe towing my Raptor toyhauler I have the NC 25,000lb tags on my dually. They said it was the truck and camper combined.
Sucks having to pay over $600 a year for tax and tags on a 09 truck.
Does any other state have higher tag costs than NC or are they about average?
Here's the chart the DMV uses, left is private and right is farm use prices.

WOW! Indiana issues weight ratings for the individual vehicle plate ie: my F350 has an 11,000 lb plate(the GVW of the truck) and my gooseneck flatbed has 9000 lb plates (the GVW of the trailer). An RV in Indiana has an "RV plate" which has no weight rating but is charged Excise Tax according to it's year of manufacture. The plate weights are not additive. I have to ask if you are required to have a CDL to drive a pickup pulling a toyhauler with a "Combined Gross Weight Rating" of 26,000lbs or over??? It seems strange that you would need a CDL to drive an empty GMC 3500 Dually plated at 26,000lbs when not pulling a trailer.

My 2017 Ram 3500, dually, has a 14000 GVWR... here in Grand California any pickup over 10000 GVWR needs to pay an extra declared weight fee. You can choose to not pay the added fee, but if you get caught towing or exceeding the 10000 weight, you can get smacked with additional fees and fines. Needless to say, i choose to pay the added weight fee. So this year my registration was ~$1250

And my ‘94 F350 DRW was about $350 with weight fees.

Did you have to claim weight? Trucks under 8001 unladen and 11499 gross are exempt.

When I bought it I had to declare that it was only for “personal” use and 10,000 GVWR.

Mine is personal use too, but in the event I end up towing something heavy or carry a load in the bed to put me over 10K (my payload is like 5000) id rather be safe than sorry and not deal with the aftermath.

Newer trucks have a higher GVWR, I don’t remember the year it changed. Mine is 10,000 lbs per the sticker on the door.
I’ve thought about a newer truck, but that would start the vicious cycle of buying a bigger trailer. I’m trying to really “retire” so I have to limit myself.

unless your being paid to drive it, it is NOT commercial. I can pull 80,000 with my other truck w/o a CDL just as long as no $ ends up in my pocket. I haul our ww2 tanks to parades and shows and stuff like that.

I don't know what state you're from... in California, ALL pickups, whether it's a Toyota or a 1 ton dually, is a commercial vehicle (even a taxicab is a commercial vehicle, but that's a different topic). Being a commercial vehicle in California does not necessarily mean the vehicle is used in commerce. There's more to it, but that's the nuts and bolts of commercial registration.

The factory towing package on our older Dodge dually included 4.10 gearing. That lifted its GCWR to 23,500#. Here in SC that weight rating is displayed on the vehicle registration and we get a different color/design tag. We have a very active state DOT patrol that often stop and inspect rigs, including RV trailers that are suspected of being over weight. If over weight you’re not going to move it again until the rig is lowered to an acceptable weight or another (better equipped) TV is brought in to move the trailer. The first fine is a minimum of $500.00. And, yes, the registration fees are much higher as the GCWR increases.
