I just tried to Help!

I rarely post and I'm not part of the Tow Police as I was over my GVWR for almost 5 years before I bought a more capable tow vehicle. Even though it was less than a 100lbs I was still over. I was just trying to inform a new owner on there numbers from the picture they posted on social media.
This individual was driving a 2020 Chevy 2500hd diesel towing a 2022 FR XLR Nitro 407. The specs on the triple axle TH has it grossing out at over 20k lbs. with a 3700 lb. hitch weight. This 45' camper is a beast and the truck literally look like it was on its bump stops. When i mentioned for her to take a look at her truck payload capacity she went off stating how it was rated to pull 35k lbs. and they bought the camper in Alabama and drove it back to Arizona with no issues. I tried to explain to her that was not possible and supplied her the towing capacity per the GM website and asked her to check the sticker on the drivers side door for her payload capacity. I wasn't trying to be mean as they had already bought the unit but do more research on the trucks capabilities. Just because it can doesn't mean it should. I probably see more 2500 trucks pulling TH's than 3500 in my neck of the woods. Anyway, she ended up deleting all of the comments from myself and others trying to tell her the same.

The Bible has an apt bit of advice: "And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet."

Trying to tell something to someone who will not hear it leaves you with a choice. Either keep on pounding your head on the wall or just go on about your business and know you did your best to inform that person of a safety issue. Shake the dust off your feet.

Some people are always right, no matter how wrong they really are. All the facts in the world still will not change their mind on something, because changing means they were wrong, and some people just absolutely cannot and will not EVER succumb to being "wrong." Heaven forbid.

In such a case, all you can do is move on. When their truck completely collapses, it still will not be their fault or responsibility. Even then, they'll be blaming someone else, because after all, they are right!

Move on, don't look back, and to quote another Bible verse: Don't throw your pearls before swine.

Or that their "beloved pooch" might actually bark when left alone in a trailer that's parked in a campground full of people trying to relax "away from noise and interruptions" .....

Something else disturbing but happens all the time was the picture posted was them picking it up at the dealer. Wonder if weights were ever discussed?

Obviously weights were never discussed. The only discussion that took place was "the sale". Another example of dealerships blind greed. No, not all of them do this, but in a competitive sales market it seems to be more common.
"Six wheels in the back means six wheels in the front" should be the rule. But we all know how many enforceable "rules" there are for the proper tow vehicle.
Zip, notta, nil ect....

If nothing else, if the person that you counselled started thinking about what you pointed out and drove alot more cautiously, and that baby steps are still steps, maybe in 5 years she will get a 3500 4 wheeler

This is why I have a new TV on order. When I weighed my 5er at the CAT scales I was 220# over my Ram's payload of 2097#.

Why the change from Ram to GMC, wasn’t for the 10 speed?

Brent (OP) you did what you could...and what you should have done. That truck was way outclassed by that size of trailer. Unfortunately some folks do not, and will not, hear anything about "payload" or "carrying" weight because they have been indoctrinated with the "it can pull xxx lbs.". It's ridiculous and really illustrates their ignorance of a truck (just dump a yard of gravel in the back of a 1/2 ton and then only talk about "pulling" - the bumper will be on the ground,"carrying").

I have been rebuffed and refuted many times and the best you can do is walk away hoping you planted a seed as others have said. We have seen on this forum that sometimes that seed grows and the RV owner realizes they need to upsize on the truck.

Like you I see more 3/4 ton trucks than anything pulling larger trailers...really large trailers which are far more than they should be towing. I attribute that to 1) ignorance and 2) the fact that so many think that a truck with HD on the side is a HD truck; it's the top of the heap and can do "anything". They don't know what they don't know. Some are open to listening, understanding and realizing their situation. Others like the one you were dealing with are right come heck or high water and how dare anyone say otherwise. Shake the dust off and move on.....and stay on a different highway.

I drove GMCs for fifteen years before I bought the Ram 2500 in Oct of 2020. Could not find any HD GMCs at that time.

My Ram is paid for and the GMC dealer where I used to do business for all those years is giving me a really good price on trade in. So the Sierra 3500 SRW has been on order since the middle of November. Currently have a ETA at the dealer of 03/06/22.

So getting back into a GMC, the Duramax and the 10 speed Allison is the reason for the change.

I had a neighbor asking me about towing a fifth wheel with his truck since his F-150 had a 3,500 lb cargo capacity. "3,500 lb, is that what your door jam sticker says?" "Yep". I opened his truck door, 1,580 capacity on the sticker. He said I obviously didn't understand how it works. I just walked away.

Was he looking at the rear axle capacity?
It is true can’t fix it!
Hoping the OP can provide the picture of the truck and trailer in question.

So far he hasn't traded up to a fifth wheel and hopefully won't.
He's also the neighbor that drove his riding mower off the retaining wall and into the lake while mowing.
I try to avoid him.

I never imagined that she would delete the post. At one point I thought I was making some headway. Last thing I asked was for her to check the trucks sticker for Payload Capacity. A few minutes later everything was gone. Picture of that poor truck was what really got me inquiring.

Well the first statement in blue, is a bit scary, if it had a lot of squat that is very bad.

The other statement in Blue is also scary, but likely true! rated to pull even 25,000# the pulling would be fine. Personally I believe that with the squat you mentioned steering had to be a bit touchy!

This is the biggest issue with overweight 5er/Tow vehicle combinations, it is the natural stability of 5er towing.

I in the past was towing a 12,300ish# 5er with our old 2001 Ram 2500 with camper package with a 8,800# GVWR, and the 5er had about a 2,500# pin. With all that we carried we were 1,500# to 1,700# over GVWR in the end. I have always encouraged others to tow within the numbers, and three years ago I got the correct TV.
Yes, the new TV is far more solid, but the old package did just fine!

OLD PACKAGE

NEW PACKAGE
