2200+ mile Colorado camping trip

Friends of our kids were getting married in Ouray Colorado and they invited the DW and I to attend.

The original plan was to Leave Wednesday, Sep 12 and split the drive up over 2 days, with an overnight stop in San Jon NM. We had 5 nights reserved at the 4J campground in Ouray and 2 more nights at Ridgway SP (after some member recommendations).

The DW has a tax accounting practice and the end of the corporate filing season was actually Saturday the 15th, so she busted her hump, to complete things before we left town and did not get home until almost midnight Wednesday.

We finally left out around 2:00 AM Thursday and managed to make Bloomfield NM by 5 or 6 PM Thursday, the DW was on the phone and made an overnight reservation at Moore's RV park, in Bloomfield, so we had a place with hookups for the night.

Moore's RV park was very nice, clean, several amenities (heated pool, showers, laundry, WIFI, dog park) and if we are in the area again would definitely go back.

We slept in, puttered around with our new 8 week old pup and headed out for the last 115 miles around noon. The 4J was a little cramped, but the scenery is spectacular, they have all the amenities, except for the dog park and pets are not allowed on the any of the grassy areas in the park... I had to take the pup out to the road to take care of business.

The DW's brother and his DW had the 3 story condo directly across the river from our campsite, so in addition to our kids and all of their friends in town for the wedding we spent time with them.

We checked out of the 4J Tuesday morning and headed to Ridgway SP, 15 or so miles north and I must say, the recommendations were accurate, it is a very nice campground, especially if you can reserve one of the riverside spots.

Lake Ridgway on the other hand is not in the best shape, it is so low you can barely see any water in it from the road and the swim beach is closed. I would estimate it to be 40+ feet low.

When checked out of Ridgway, on Thursday morning and decided to take a different, more scenic route home and headed through Montrose to Lake City, La Veta and ended up in Blue Lake FS campground for the night. the drive was spectacular, not much traffic and the campground (nice big sites, no services, single well with a hand pump for water), at 10,000 feet was mostly empty.

Got up the next morning and headed to Trinidad CO, for breakfast at Bob & Earl's Cafe (awesome food), followed the rain into Dallas from just north of Wichita Falls and really hit it about Decatur, arriving home a little after midnight.

All in all and excellent trip seeing new places it a state we have been to many times.

Excellent report. We missed the San Juans this year to check off a bucket list item, the Reno Air Races. We'll definitely be back in the San Juans next fall.
Glad you had such a great trip!

Thanks for sharing that. We may have to put that on our bucket list.

Brian thanks for the overview. You made a trip through country we love and try to visit every year; we missed in 2018 and are so disappointed. When we hit that route we don't usually take the RV and stay in condos. Your post made us feel us miss that area SO much.
