Great info! What does EMS stand for? Where is it installed?

Hmm... I don't know what EMS stands for, but it's a surge protector with additional features. If the power is not good, such as reverse polarity, open ground, over/under voltage, etc., the the EMS will disconnect power to protect your equipment.

Progressive Industries seems to be the big name in RV EMSs.

There are external ones the plug into the campground pedestal and there are internally wired ones.

Note that an EMS probably would *not* have helped with your transfer switch charred wires. Was your switch perhaps an IOTA brand? There was a recall on those for overheating.
