New bed platform..concerns....suggestion?

Bought a sleep number bed when they were on sale in Nov. Now time to install.

The bed platform in my Cougar doesn't reach to the bed edges.....about 4 1/2 to 5 inches short on each side. Was just going to replace the platform with another/wider board but thought perhaps with that much overhang that perhaps the platform might break if we sit on the side of the bed. The board is something like 3/8 in plywood. Doesn't appear to be room at the hinge to bump it up to 1/2 inch.

Anyone encounter this? How did you handle?

Sleep number is telling me they need support on the perimeter of the bed......

I think Im going to screw a 3//4" plywood board on top of the existing board...letting the existing board be the support.
