Post Trip

Finally got a few minutes to sit down and talk about our trip. We left on 29 June and got home on 29 Jul.

First stop was an overnight in Colorado Springs. Great KOA for kids. Have a nice little water park. We didn’t have any kids with us, but still a nice overnight stop. My only complaint, we planned to eat breakfast at their little diner before leaving, supposed to open at 8. They told us it wouldn’t open until 830 and then take about 20 mins to get everything ready. We left without eating.

Then spent 5 days in Rapid City at Ellsworth AFB, visited Wall Drug and the Badlands before heading up to Hill City. Stayed at Horsethief RV park. Not a bad park, but the sites could have been more level. We had the left side tires off the ground and the picnic table was pretty much useless because of the angle. Rained a few times and had a river through the site as the water all washed down hill (obviously). Put a lot of miles on the Harley while there between Custer National Park, Rushmore, Needles Highway and Sturgis. Also got COVID while there.

Then it was over to Yellowstone. Stayed at Headwaters Flagg Ranch. Headwaters is nice, especially for larger units like ours. Yellowstone was in good shape. Since we were still recovering from COVID, we didn’t do much other than drive around and took the Harley for a ride.

Final stop was down in Cheyenne for Frontier Days. We were over COVID by then and had a great time as always at FD. Definitely a bucket list item for people who haven’t been. We stayed at FE Warren AFB while there. I was stationed there and ran the squadron that over sees the famcamp so new what to expect. Nice famcamp, hasn’t changed.

Finally made our way home, had a flat 350 miles from home, talked about that in a different post. Total we put on 3672 miles, averaged 11.8 MPGs with the Duramax. Just over $5 per gallon for fuel for a total fuel cost of $1,543.

Got home to the other issues I mentioned last week in a different thread, dealing with all of that now. It was a great 30 day trip, but I think 15-20 days will be our max in the future. That would eliminate a lot of the issues we came home to.
