Back when towing TTs I used an implement pin, they're much harder like a grade 8 bolt, from TSC with couple washers & a hair pin.

Why would you replace the whole WDH because the Chinese Hitch Pin Broke? That's like replacing the Truck because it had a Flat Tire......

The unit was 15yrs old...and was showing a lot of wear, which I really didnt think much of. In fact the area where the ball on top of the WDH was slightly bent back. The bars moved more than I think they should of and the F250's suspension is obviously more heavy duty than the F150's. It was time to upgrade for safety sake.

Since I never remove my hitch, I just use a zinc plated Grade 8 bolt, I believe a 5/8" and a nylock nut on the other side. Most of those pin locks are cheap mild steel. I have seen those pins bend. Grade 8 will not.

I remember hearing something years ago, probably 10 years ago by now even though it doesn’t seem that long ago, about pin failures. If I remember correctly it was with Reese receiver hitch pins. If yours is 15 years old, it’s quite possible it could have been in that same category/time period. If I remember correctly, the complaint/problem is exactly what happened to yours. Again, don’t remember all the details or even for sure if it was Reese, I just remember I replaced mine at the time just to be sure.

My only concerns with using a grade 8 bolt or standard non locking pin is theft. These hitch's are not cheap.

If I were looking to steal a hitch I'd chose the locking pin rather than the bolt with a nylock nut on it. The bolt will require tools to remove, the lock just needs a big hammer.

Stress cracks can develop and eventually fail.
This is another place to inspect for cracks, galling or breakage.
Also these pins have weight/tow ratings so be certain your pin is within tolerances.
I had one that started to show a crack after a couple years. (It is one of those thing you set and forget). I discovered NOT

I frequently inspect my locking hitch pin and I carry spare non locking hitch pins. My locking pin is from Proven Industries and is keyed the same as the hitch lock I have for when the trailer is parked. Proven's locking hitch pins require you insert a spring hairpin, just like a regular hitch pin, before the lock will engage.

Those locks on the pins are for show only. I lost some keys and had to remove those twice. Not going to say how its done since its a public forum.
