Question Salem vs. Hornet?

Hi, we are looking at travel trailers for use as a seasonal camper. We have looked at just about every brand name out there.... Rockwood, Flagstaff, Heartland, Salem, & Keystone products. (we have looked at Jayco in the past).

We've narrowed it down between a new 2011 Salem 28RLS and a new 2010 Hornet 28RLS. It seems to be that you get a TON more standard options on the Hornet than you do on the Salem. We also like the real wood cabinet doors & drawers, electric awning and night shades.... not to mention the porcelain toilet! We also would prefer to spend under $20K as this is our budget since we have to pay the seasonal fee each year.

We'd love to hear your input on buying a "stick & tin" camper vs. a fiberglass sided camper for use as a seasonal. Both of these campers are stick & tin. We do see a lot of stick & tin campers at the campground we are planning on putting down roots. We do not plan on towing the camper, we will actually need to have it delivered, so weight is not an issue.

We notice the sides of the slideout have bulging give in each of these 2 models. The material does not seem to be adhered to the wood of the slideout. Is this normal or a concern?

Any pros / cons on either camper would be appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Two of our members, snoopdog and camp, both have Hornets although their models are different that the one you are considering. Perhaps they may chime in and provide you with some feedback. You might try sending them a Personal Message.

Hi, we have a 2008 hornet fks with patio door. We use this mostly seasonal also. It is stick and tin as you say. We do like the quality of the hornet for the price. We are upgradeing to a 2011 hornet rkds for more storage in the bedroom. The new hornet is revamped to be metal studs and fiberglass. You should check them out and get what you want. It seems most companies are going to this for weight. Even though you arn't towing it you may want to upgrade and this may be a factor down the road. Future sale or trade in.

I forgot, the ends of the slide out are a different material and they are loose from the camper. Not a problem and easy to wash. The fiberglas is easy to clean, and wax. We find the metal is harder and it dents easily. Being seasonal you are able to pick up stones and such thrown from a mower and kids running and throwing things. You will not always be there to see. I find the people with smooth sides don't get as many blemishes. And don't forget about hail storms.

We bought a new 2011 Hornet 27BHS in July and are very pleased. Before buying the Hornet we were deciding between it and a salem 26 TBUD. We liked the look of the Hornet more but it also had better features. The Hornet had more cabinet and counter space, it came with a TV, had an eletric awning, 30lb LP tanks, and a crowned roof. We paid a little more for the Hornet, but are very pleased with our decision.

Thanks for all the input....feel free to keep it coming! We have noticed you get a "lot more bang for the buck" in the Hornet. I think the flooring is OSB and not plywood though, as it is in the Salem.
