I have the same problem with my '03 Cougar 276. I have thought of using a piece of PVC pipe to cover it so the sun won't do any more damage. The more I think of it, the more I realize the reason the top part shreds, decays, etc. is because it has lost its UV protection. If I had known this years back, I would have used a tarp to protect that side of the trailer since the other side is protected from the sun.

Another option is to have a marine repair shop sew a new strip onto the top section covering the damaged part. If done over the topmost 18" long and the length of the awning, you should have a "new" surface, which can be made from a heavy duty materiel, to protect the awning.

Good luck to finding a really inexpensive fix, but I doubt there is one, especially these days. Of course, if the shops are closed, they might be willing to do the work "on the side" as long as everyone maintains the correct social distance of six to ten feet. (In my book, ten is better and everyone should wear a mask.

My awning also had the same problem. Finally, I replaced it with SunWave on Amazon

Duct it

My awnings were doing the same, their a multi color white gray black type, with the first foot being black. I used 2 strips of the wide 2.8 inch black Gorilla brand duct tape. Barely noticeable when extended unless you look at where it is wrapped over the edges. Closing in 1 year and still good.
